Amd radeon hd 5700 series comparison. Parameters of the advanced solution of this series

The characteristics of the AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series, as noted earlier, indicated that these were mid-class adapters. The manufacturer included two models of devices in the line, which were intended for installation only in desktop computing systems. The younger of them was labeled HD 5750, and the older was HD 5770. The key difference between these two modifications of accelerators is the clock frequency. In the first case they are reduced insignificantly, and in the second they are increased.

Positioning of the accelerator family

The HD58XX line of discrete graphics controllers was the most productive at the time of the release of the accelerators under consideration in this AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series review. The characteristics of such flagship devices made it possible to implement the most resource-intensive tasks associated with processing high-quality images. That is, you can quite successfully use such an accelerator in a graphics station. Also, such accelerators looked very confident as part of the ultimate gaming PCs.
But the HD 57XX line in question was aimed at selling less powerful computers. Therefore, it was inappropriate to use them in graphics stations due to the fact that the performance of these two modifications of accelerators was poor. insufficient level. As a result, the only possible area of use for these devices is mid-level gaming computing systems. It was precisely this narrow specialized niche that the solutions under consideration were aimed at.

Low-end device specifications

The characteristics of the AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series labeled 5750 indicate that this accelerator is based on the RV850 microprocessor, codenamed Juniper. This silicon chip was produced using 40 nm technology. It included 1040 million transistor surface components. The microprocessor included 720 stream modules, 36 TMU elements and 16 rasterization components. The graphics accelerator core operates at a frequency of 720 MHz.
The amount of RAM in this accelerator is 1 GB. The type of chips used in this device is GDDR5. The latter operate in nominal mode at a frequency of 4600 MHz. The bus width for connecting the video buffer to the graphics processor is 128 bits. As a result, throughput RAM is limited to 73 Gbit/sec.

Parameters of the advanced solution of this series

The description of the AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series in the 5770 version indicates the following differences from the previously reviewed junior model:
The number of stream processors has been increased from 720 to 800. At the same time, they already operate at a frequency of 800 MHz.
The operating memory frequency has been increased to 4800 MHz.
All other characteristics remained unchanged. Although the number of differences is minimal, according to test results this allows us to get a real 15% increase in speed and performance. Again, this difference was relevant by 2009 standards. Now the difference in performance between these two accelerator models is minimal.

When the HD 5700 series video cards were released, they could no longer be called the best. This series was intended for the mass buyer, and AMD thus simply continued to fill the niche of video chips supporting DirectX 11. In fact, cards in this series should become cheaper analogues of the HD 5800 version. This conclusion can be drawn from the characteristics of the ATI 5700 Series. This series included only two cards: the HD 5770 and HD 5790. There was also the HD 5830 video card, which would logically be classified as part of the ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series line. Its characteristics were quite consistent with this series, and it should have had the “name” HD 5790, but the developer classified it as a different series due to the 256-bit memory bus and a different graphics processor.

ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series Specifications

Considering that there are two video cards in the series, let's start with the younger model. The HD 5750 reference model runs at 700 MHz and the GPU has 720 UPUs. The older video card HD 5770 differs in better side: Here the processor frequency is 850 MHz and the number of processors here is 800.

Before the release of both video cards, there were rumors that they would have memory operating at the same frequencies, but in fact the frequencies are slightly different. The younger model has a memory frequency of 1150 MHz, and the memory frequency of the older model is 1200 MHz. This means that the latter will be slightly faster, although the difference is very small. The GDDR5 memory capacity of both cards is 1024 MB, and the memory bus is 128 bits. This clearly cannot be included in the list of advantages of the models.

The main competitors of the HD 5750 video card are the GTX 260 from the manufacturer Nvidia or the HD 4890 video card. However, the latter is a little faster, because in the performance test in the 3DMark program the 5770 card scores 9103 points, and the older HD 4890 graphics gets a score of 10312 points.

Cost and overclocking characteristics of ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series

In this line, the card turned out to be much better than its younger version. Its average price in Moscow is 4,000 rubles. Although today this model is no longer produced and it is impossible to find it on sale. Note that the adapter has proven itself to be a fairly cool and quiet solution with high performance. And if you buy this video card from third-party partner manufacturers with an improved cooling system, then you can generally get complete silence from the system unit even when running fairly “heavy” 3D applications.

If you overclock this board a little with a good cooling system, it can even catch up with the HD 5830 in performance. And if you use 2 HD 5770 video cards in tandem using CrossFire X technology, you can get a big increase in performance.

About the HD 5750 card

As for the HD 5750 in the ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series video card series, its characteristics are worse compared to the older model. And although the performance almost did not drop compared to the HD 5770 card, the model turned out to be quite hot and loud. It got very hot, and high cooler rotation speeds were required to cool it. Most likely, the cooling system was extremely unsuccessful, but there are also video cards from partners with their own cooling systems. They may not be noisy.

However, despite the lower characteristics of the ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series (HD 5750) video card, when overclocked it can reach the performance of the HD 5770 model. This means that the buyer has the opportunity to get approximately the same performance for the same money. But, frankly speaking, the heating and noise of the junior video card in the line scared off many buyers who learned about these shortcomings from forums on the Internet.

Conclusion

At the time of release, both cards were positively received by the public. For relatively little money you could buy a card that supported modern technologies and allowed you to run game releases at maximum settings. At the same time, these cards have never been TOP, and today they are outdated. By modern standards technical specifications ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series are rather weak for 3D applications (games). However, such cards are found in old office computers or laptops (they use mobile versions), which are suitable for surfing the Internet and office tasks.

The high-profile appearance of the ATI Radeon HD 5870 video cards shifted attention from the most popular products priced under $200 to the top segment, but the company did not focus exclusively on it. Middle-income gamers will also not be left without new products: the Radeon HD 5700 series has gone on sale.

ATI Radeon HD 5800 graphics accelerators brought the Californian-Canadian developer an unconditional advantage in the top segment. But, despite the undeniable importance of image products, companies receive the greatest income from the sale of devices in the mid-price range. In it, AMD’s trump card will be a simplified variation of the Evergreen graphics architecture, codenamed Juniper, which is the basis for the Radeon HD 5770 and 5750 video cards.

Juniper, the younger brother of cypress

For the second generation of the Terascale graphics architecture, on which the Radeon HD 5800 and 5700 series GPUs are based, AMD chose codenames based on the names coniferous plants: the older series is built on the Cypress core (cypress), the younger series is built on Juniper (juniper). At the same time, the company is deviating from this principle in the case of the upcoming dual-chip Radeon HD 5900 video card - it will be called Hemlock (hemlock, the closest relative of which is carrots). However, let's leave the issue of fancy names and consider the technical aspects.

The Radeon HD 5700 line consists of two models, Radeon HD 5770 and HD 5750. The Juniper GPUs used as the basis for these video cards differ both in the number of activated functional units and in frequencies. Architecturally, they are exactly half of Cypress: the older chip contains 10 SIMD cores, providing a total of 800 shader processors and 40 texture units, and 16 rasterization devices. Quantitatively, these characteristics are identical to those inherent in the RV770 core - the “heart” of the Radeon HD 4870 and HD 4850, however new processor has larger cache sizes and expanded functionality: DirectX 11 is supported; a new anisotropic filtering algorithm that does not depend on the viewing angle; accelerated supersampling; HDMI 1.3 with support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio output. ATI Eyefinity technology is also fully implemented. The only thing that has disappeared is the ability to calculate with double precision in GPGPU applications - advanced scientists will have to spend money on a video card from the top family.

The younger version of Juniper, Radeon HD 5750, is produced by rejecting chips of the older modification. It disables one SIMD core, so the GPU is equipped with 720 shader processors and 36 texture units. In addition, the core frequency has been reduced from 850 to 700 MHz. Otherwise, the characteristics of the video cards are the same: the memory bus is 128-bit wide, the video cards are equipped with GDDR5 RAM with a capacity of 1 GB for the older version and 1 GB or 512 MB for the younger version, the difference in frequencies is only 50 MHz.

The GPU is produced at the facilities of the Taiwanese semiconductor giant TSMC according to the 40-nanometer process technology and consists of 1.04 billion transistors. The maximum power consumption of video cards is stated at 108 and 86 W for the Radeon HD 5770 and HD 5750, respectively, the minimum is 18 and 16 W, which is significantly less than the previous generation. Power for both modifications is provided by a single six-pin socket (by the way, on the Radeon HD 5770 it is located close to the cooler casing and recessed, which makes disconnecting the connector a task for the patient).

The reference Radeon HD 5770 video cards are very similar to the Radeon HD 5800 series, have coolers of similar designs and colors and differ only in the length of the boards and the configuration of the power connectors. The cooling system of the younger model is simpler - a regular radiator with a fan on it. The set of interfaces for connecting output devices is identical: two DVI Dual-Link and one each HDMI and DisplayPort. End manufacturers have already presented their own modifications, mainly differing in frequencies and design of the CO.

The cooling systems of the new products are quite quiet and can be compared with models of previous generations equipped with modified coolers. Obviously, this was achieved by simplifying the heatsink configuration, since the fan on the reference Radeon HD 5770 is the same as the 5800 series. This, however, did not benefit temperature conditions: despite the “cold” 40-nanometer process technology, under load the GPU heats up to 80-85 ° C, although this does not cause stability problems.

There is intense competition ahead

Testing the new generation of mid-class ATI video cards confirms that the Canadian developer is trying to keep its promise to double the performance of its products in all market segments with the release of the next series of GPUs. Today, the direct competitors of these video cards, both in terms of performance and price, are the Radeon HD 4850-4890, but do not forget that these devices are top-end in their generation, and only the two-chip Radeon HD 4870 X2 is higher. If you look at market segments, then the former “mid-range” Radeon HD 4670 is simply incomparable with them. As for NVIDIA products, in its arsenal only the GeForce GTX 260 216 SP can compete with ATI accelerators based on Juniper cores, and in fact only with the Radeon HD 5770. The American vendor has comparable video cards to the Radeon HD 5750 at the moment no: the GeForce GTS 250 is significantly inferior in performance and is predominantly competitive in games that actively use PhysX or are developed as part of The Way It's Meant To Be Played initiative. ATI plans to soon respond to the first technology with the open OpenPhysics initiative.

As already noted, the balance of power between new products and competing video cards greatly depends on the specific game engine. Thus, CryEngine is very demanding on memory bandwidth, and there, at least twice as wide buses in previous generation products from both vendors help them noticeably. At the same time, balanced games positively respond to innovations in Juniper, allowing new products to get ahead by 10-25% compared to the Radeon HD 4800 family. As for NVIDIA video cards, the GeForce GTX 260 is closest in performance to the Radeon HD 5770, while how the Radeon HD 5750 is almost on par with the GeForce GTS 250. It is also worth considering that at the moment only the second (or rather, only the first public) version of the driver for the Radeon HD 5800/5700 family is available, and in its new releases the performance situation may improve a lot.

In addition, in the rivalry between two vendors, in addition to speed, there are other factors. Thus, the production volumes of Juniper chips will only grow, which will reduce the cost of both GPUs (the 40-nanometer process technology itself is cheaper than the 55-nanometer one) and finished cards (the shortage will disappear, present moment causing greatly inflated retail prices for new items). At the same time, according to some reports, NVIDIA GT200b chips will soon be discontinued, which will concentrate on the future Fermi architecture. AMD now has room for maneuver in a possible price fight, but NVIDIA does not have it - in case of a reduction in price latest models A competitor's company will either have to sell scarce products at a loss or simply ignore this inequality.

To summarize, we can say that the ATI Radeon HD 5700 family turned out to be successful: it is noticeably faster than the previous generation video cards, has the same cost and has a set of functions that those simply do not have. At the same time, the new products have the potential to become cheaper, unlike the corresponding NVIDIA models. Thus, AMD takes the lead not only in the high-end segment, but also in the mid-price range.

IN this material we will talk about video cards that belong to the AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series. Characteristics of devices belonging to this series will be given below. Let's focus on two developments.

Comparison

So, let's start talking about the AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series. Characteristics of the 5750 and 5770 solutions deserve special attention. They can be compared with the 5870. Thus, we get that the AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series is a video card that has reduced performance compared to the specified flagship solution, while maintaining its main features.

Architecture

The manufacturer decided to please users with a mid-level solution, which was the AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series device. The characteristics of the video cards combined in this series confirm this thesis. The solution we are interested in runs on a chip codenamed Juniper. The device was developed in accordance with 40 nm technology. It is based on 1.04 billion transistors. A unified architecture is used, which has an array of common processors that provides stream processing of numerous types of information.

The developers have not forgotten about hardware support for DirectX 11. It should be noted that the Shader Model solution is supported. There is a 128-bit bus on board. We can find two controllers in the AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series device. The characteristics of each are described by a width of 64 bits and support for the GDDR5 standard. The frequency ranges from 700 to 850 MHz. There are ten SIMD cores. They have 800 scalar ALUs. This allows the device to perform floating point calculations. There are ten enlarged texture blocks. They support FP32 and FP16 formats. The device has four dozen texture addressing blocks, and an equal number of elements that are responsible for bilinear filtering.

Now let's take a closer look at the RADEON HD 5770 video card. It has a frequency of 850 MHz. The number of universal processors in this case is 800. There are 40 texture blocks, and 16 blending elements. The frequency is 4800 MHz. The type complies with the GDDR5 standard. Volume - 1024 MB. Bandwidth is 76.8 gigabytes per second. Regarding the theoretical maximum speed shading, it reaches 13.6 gigapixels. There are a pair of CrossFireX connectors. A bus conforming to the PCI Express standard is provided. The device has the following connectors: DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI-I Dual Link. Energy consumption this decision is 18 - 108 W. The development includes a dual-slot design.

As for the 5750 model, its core frequency is 700 MHz. The number of universal processors reaches 720. If we talk about texture units, there are 36 of them, blending elements - 16. The effective memory frequency reaches 4600 MHz. In this case, memory that complies with the GDDR5 standard is used. Its volume is 512/1024 megabytes. The memory bandwidth indicator is at around 73.6 GB. The theoretical maximum fill rate is 11.2 gigapixels per second.

Speed

So we got acquainted with the features of the AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series device. We will describe video card overclocking below. Its performance can be improved by 400 MHz. Let's consider the frequencies that should be set to maintain stable operation of the equipment. First we set up the GPU. We set this indicator within 900 - 920 units. Next we move on to the core frequency. We set it at 5000. That's all.

In “Gaming” No. 12/2009 we talked in detail about the new generation of video cards AMD and suggested that the company will soon begin to capture the mid-priced market. And now, less than a month has passed, video cards from the series appeared in our editorial office Radeon HD 5700- first modifications Radeon HD 5800. So far the new line is represented by only two devices - Radeon HD 5770 And HD 5750. We examined what the new cards had lost compared to the flagship and checked whether they were cooler than last year's line.

Loss of strength

The Radeon HD 5700 video cards have a new 40nm Juniper processor - essentially, a heavily cut-down version of the flagship Cypress. The architecture was not changed, but the power was reduced significantly: from 2.15 billion transistors, less than half remained, 1.04 billion. SIMD blocks were also halved - now there are 10 of them. Hence there are only 16 rasterization units, 800 streaming and 40 texture processors.

But that's not the point; It’s much worse that the memory bus was narrowed to 128 bits. Now, even when using GDDR5 at 1200 MHz, the throughput drops by half, from 153.6 to 76.8 Gbps, and performance also decreases.

But all the basic technologies of the new generation remained in place. Radeon HD 5700 graphics cards support three monitors in ATI Eyefinity, all the delights DirectX 11 and technology ATI Avivo HD.

Sapphire Radeon HD 5770

In appearance, the Radeon HD 5770 is a smaller copy of the Radeon HD 5870.

The card came to us in standard packaging and with a reference design. The equipment is decent: a CrossFire bridge, HDMI-to-VGA and PCIe-to-MOLEX adapters, as well as a download code for the first game with full DX11 support - Colin McRae DiRT 2.

The board looks like a smaller copy of the Radeon HD 5870. The cooler is the same two-slot turbine with one fan and nice holes on the back side. It’s difficult to judge the build quality, since we came across an unsuccessful sample with wires coming out of the cooler.

The card only needs one six-pin power cable to operate; the connector for it is recessed deep into the cooler body. Under load, the card requires 108 W, and in idle mode - 17 W (compare with 188 and 27 W for the Radeon HD 5870). The HD 5770 also has a pair of CrossFire pins; The monitor outputs are the same as those of the flagship video card - two DVI and one HDMI and DisplayPort each.

By technical parameters The video card does not differ from standard solutions. The memory here costs 1 GB, and it operates at a standard frequency of 4800 MHz.

Sapphire Radeon HD 5750 Vapor-X

We were more fortunate with the second video card: it arrived in non-standard version- with cooling system Vapor-X. The Juniper processor has an original heatsink with capillary heat removal. Its entire surface is literally riddled with small holes. The principle of operation is this: moisture is applied to the surface of the processor, which evaporates under the influence of high temperature and removes an impressive part of the thermal energy. Cool air is drawn in by an 80mm fan mounted on the radiator.

The Radeon HD 5750 is shorter than the HD 5770 by about two and a half centimeters, but technical differences from HD 5770 are small. The Radeon HD 5750 was deprived of another SIMD unit (resulting in only 720 stream processors and 36 texture units). The rasterization blocks were left in place (there are 16 of them here). The memory bus was also left untouched - 128 bits, but the speed of 1 GB GDDR5 was reduced to 1150 MHz.

At peak load, the Sapphire Radeon HD 5750 Vapor-X consumes 86 W, in 2D mode - 16 W. For power supply, of course, it also needs one six-pin plug, and the front panel of the board is no different from that previously discussed on the HD 5770 - two DVIs, one HDMI, one DisplayPort.

Anticipating Results

In general, the characteristics of both boards are somewhat surprising. If you look at the table, you will find that the characteristics of the Radeon HD 5770 are close to last year's flagship, Radeon HD 4870. New map differs only in the higher operating frequency of stream processors and memory and b O more transistors. But at the same time, the old generation has a memory bus twice as wide - normal 256 bits. And even at a lower speed of GDDR5 - 3600 MHz - the throughput of the old generation is 47 Gbit/s higher and amounts to 123.8 Gbit/s.

Of course, the HD 5770 has the advantage of supporting DirectX 11 and Eyefinity, but tests will show how much this will help it in the fight for performance. We compared the HD 5700 series with last year's Radeon HD 4870 and its competitor from NVIDIA - MSI N260GTX Lightning Black Edition(Only the overclocked version of the card was at hand, and we had to manually reduce the frequencies to standard).

Test bench

By tradition, we did not skimp on the components of the test stand: we installed motherboard MSI X58 Platinum, equipped it Intel Core i7 920, added 6 GB of memory Kingston HyperX DDR3-1600 and supplied power from the 800-W unit OCZ. It all worked under control Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit. We installed the latest drivers for testing AMD video cards ATI Catalyst 9.10, which added new FSAA modes. MSI N260GTX Lightning Black Edition ran on latest version NVIDIA ForceWare 191.07.

Our list of tests is standard. Synthetics FutureMark 3DMark06 and games - Crysis, Resident Evil 5 And . We didn’t go too far and set the maximum resolution at 1680x1050 and anisotropic filtering at 2x.

The results surprised us quite a bit. We, of course, understood that a slight reduction in frequencies and the loss of one SIMD on the Radeon HD 5750 would not lead to a serious loss of performance, but the fact that the difference with the Radeon HD 5770 would be only 3-4 frames per second was a surprise. Moreover, the flagship of the last generation, Radeon HD 4870, thanks to either a wide memory bus or well-designed drivers, left behind not only the HD 5750, but also the older Radeon HD 5770, bringing it 5-6 frames per second in each test.

AMD continues to capture the market, and if a month ago it became a leader in the top segment, today it has joined the fight for the mid-price range. Absolute winner new series you can’t name it - still, the lag, even if insignificant, from the flagship of the previous generation is frustrating. But we also can’t write off support for DirectX 11 and the ability to connect three monitors at once. And despite all the lags, the Radeon HD 5700 series shows excellent performance: after all, 35-40 frames in Crysis at maximum settings is very decent. The only thing that confuses the Radeon HD 5770 is the price. They ask for about 6,000 rubles for the card, and this is not just a thousand more expensive than for the more productive Radeon HD 4870, but also the same as for the GeForce GTX 260. You have to choose: either new technologies or extra fps.
