In the well-known Viburnum family, the Snow Globe, or Viburnum Buldenezh, is especially notable for its excellent decorative qualities. It looks gorgeous during flowering, when it is completely covered with large spherical inflorescences of dazzling whiteness. Without being distinguished by its capricious character, viburnum Buldenezh requires compliance with the basic rules of agricultural technology in planting and care.

Viburnum Buldenezh: planting on the site

Snow globe is a purely ornamental shrub that is planted depending on its character. planting material and time of work. Since this is a sterile plant, when planting, cuttings with a well-developed root system, layering from the mother bush, or an adult bush intended for division are used.

The time of placing the shrub on the site depends on the planting method. In the spring, bushes formed from last year's cuttings will be planted in the ground. And in the fall you can plant only those plants that are obtained as a result of dividing adult specimens.

Select for landing open place evenly illuminated by the sun throughout the day. The shrub will feel best near a pond or other source of water. If this is not the case, then you need to take care of regular watering of the plant in advance, since the lack of water will affect its decorative effect.

Snow globe does not make any special demands on the composition of the soil, but it grows well and produces especially large inflorescences on well-structured and fertile soils.

Before planting, a layer of drainage is laid in a deep hole, up to half a meter, and covered with nutritional mixture consisting of compost, garden soil and mineral fertilizers. They must include the required components - potassium, nitrogen, phosphorus. The future plant will respond well to the addition of wood ash.

When the fertile layer in the hole settles and becomes denser, make a depression in the middle, place the roots of the young seedling there and sprinkle them with soil, covering the neck by 4-5 cm. After slightly compacting the soil, the plant is watered abundantly and the tree trunk is mulched.

Viburnum buldenezh: planting and caring for the plant after it

After planting, if everything was done correctly, the bush quickly takes root and begins to grow. Already in 2-3 years it will bloom profusely and give good growth. This is facilitated by regular care, which consists of the following activities: watering, fertilizing and bush formation.

Viburnum Buldenezh should be watered regularly and abundantly. Under no circumstances should the soil be allowed to dry out. This will affect the decorative appearance of the bush.

Young bushes need to be fed only 2-3 years after planting. The first fertilizing with nitrogen fertilizers is applied in early spring before the buds open. The second is carried out in the fall and potassium and phosphorus are added. The dry ingredients are diluted with water and watered at the root or simply scattered around the tree trunk and sprinkled with soil.

In autumn, before leaving for winter or in spring, lingering foliage and dry inflorescences are removed from the branches.

During the season, care is taken to ensure that pests do not appear on the bushes; the viburnum leaf beetle is considered the most dangerous, and they are not covered with powdery mildew. Timely treatment with special preparations can save you from both.

They water the soil a couple of times during the season. complex fertilizers and add ash.

REPRODUCTION

Kalina Buldenezh reproduces well vegetatively:
o layering
o dividing the bush
o green summer cuttings.

Reproduction by layering

In the spring, make a hole to a depth of 10 cm, bend it down, pin the shoot, cover it with humus, compact it, and maintain soil moisture. By autumn the shoots should take root. After 2 years, they are separated from the mother bush.
Propagation by green summer cuttings.

In June, cuttings with one internode on last year's shoots, 7-8 cm long, are prepared, planted in well-washed river sand, under which a layer of humus 6-10 cm is laid or in loose soil to a depth of 2-3 cm in the garden bed. They cover it with either glass or film, shading it from the sun, and even out the temperature with agrofibre, folded in half.
Inside the greenhouse, a warm and humid microclimate is maintained by spraying warm water. Next, the young bushes are grown in a school.

PLANTING Viburnum seedlings

The planting pattern is 2x2m, it is allowed to deepen the root collar up to 5 cm. The soil is compacted.
In the first year, the plant rises 0.3 m - slowly, root system not developed. Further growth can be up to 1 m per year. At 3-4 years the bush reaches a height of 1.5 m, at 5 years – 2-2.5 m, at 12 years – up to 3 m. Kalina Buldonezh lives long - up to 60 years.

BUSH FORMATION

To obtain a multi-stemmed bush, young viburnum is cut at a height of 15-20 cm from the ground. Inflorescences that appear in the first year are cut off unblown. This is done in order to obtain lush and abundant flowering. Next, young growing shoots are pinched at the end of July - beginning of August. In subsequent years, pruning during further formation of the crown is carried out in June-July, after the end of flowering, so that new ones can be formed on the branches. flower buds for next year. In summer, the side branches are shortened, the size of the bush is reduced, and the central part is thinned out. No pruning has been done since the end of August; the plant needs to get stronger and prepare for winter and cold weather. In spring, pruning is not done so as not to weaken the intensity of flowering.
With age, the outer branches become “weeping”, slightly hanging down. Due to the abundance of inflorescences, the bush falls over and bends, so it is tied up.

STAMP FORM

In beauty - standard form Kalina Buldenezh During flowering, it is in no way inferior to the standard form of roses. The plant tolerates molding pruning well, which allows you to obtain specimens with a spectacular crown on a low and high trunk.

Standard form of Kalina Buldonezh

When pruning, one powerful shoot is left, the crown is formed at a height of 1.5-2 m, branches longer than 25-30 cm are pinched. Once every 7-10 years, thin out the crown, cutting out branches that are broken, dry or spoiling the shape of the plant. The shoots and shoots under the bush are removed.
Kalina Buldenezh goes well with garden mock orange, early-blooming spirea, lilac, mauve colors, its beauty is emphasized by the foliage of the Thunberg barberry, and the lush image is picked up by paniculate hydrangea. It is magnificent in single and group plantings. The concept of a white garden is impossible without this wonderful shrub.

Beautiful name for this form decorative viburnum translated from French as " snowball", and the people called the lush flowering bush "snowball". Planting viburnum Buldenezh does not cause difficulties even for inexperienced gardeners, and caring for it is simple, it consists of watering, pruning, fertilizing and weeding.

In May, for the whole month, this shrub is covered with round caps of snow-white inflorescences up to 15 cm in diameter, so it is readily used to decorate gardens and city parks, as rich Russian landowners and European nobility used to decorate their estates. Viburnum Buldenezh does not bear fruit, since all its flowers are sterile and sterile, so it is planted exclusively in decorative purposes– this can be a single planting or entire hedges.

Conditions for landing

Viburnum is planted in early spring. In autumn, it is advisable to plant only seedlings obtained by dividing an adult bush (by digging up side shoots). Good care helps a three-year-old bush reach a height of 1.5 m, and without pruning, an adult tree grows above 3 m.

The place for planting Buldenezh is chosen to be semi-shaded, since in the sun the flowering period will be shortened, and in the shade the inflorescences will become incomplete, in addition, the bush will suffer from pests. Planting must be carried out responsibly, since viburnum is a long-lived plant and can grow and bloom in a selected area for up to 60 years. If necessary, an adult bush can be transplanted, but this will be difficult. Viburnum grows well along reservoirs, but also feels great in city conditions.

The soil for viburnum needs nutritious and loose, non-acidic. Heavy clay soil cultivated and lightened by adding sand, peat and humus. A planting hole for a young seedling is prepared with a size of at least 50x50 cm (up to a size of 60x80 is possible). A mixture of soil with compost, sand, peat, ash and suitable fertilizers is poured onto the drainage made of stones or tree bark.

Fertilizers when planting viburnum Buldenezh use potassium-phosphorus, for example "Agronan", or diammofoska, "Agricola", AVA.

A distance of at least 1.5–2.0 m is left between two bushes. Root collar young plant can be buried 3-5 cm. A seedling is placed on a cone-shaped tubercle in the planting hole, sprinkled with earth, compacted and watered abundantly. The surface of the earth around the bush is mulched, for example, with peat.

Viburnum care

Planting viburnum is accompanied by mulching; in the first years after planting, it is also advisable to cover the root circle with additional humus or mulch in the winter. You can plant them around the bush and not cut them off for the winter, which will give the young roots additional protection from frost. Very cold winter Viburnum shoots can freeze slightly, but with healthy roots the bush quickly recovers. The shoots do not require any shelter, as this shrub tolerates frost well and takes root even in Siberia.

Viburnum Buldenezh loves moisture. In dry summers, the shrub requires frequent and abundant watering, at least twice a week. On mature plant up to 20 liters of water are consumed.

Fertilize the shrub in early spring and autumn before leaf fall:

  • during spring feeding, nitroammophoska is added;
  • in autumn - superphosphate and potassium nitrate.

Caring for viburnum Buldenezh also involves mulching. Mulch in tree trunk circle plants need to be renewed annually (maximum every three years), digging up last year's layer and adding a new one.

To protect viburnum from diseases caused by fungi, such as gray leaf spot or powdery mildew, bushes in early spring, and also when a problem is detected, are sprayed with Bordeaux mixture. If the situation is already advanced and the bush cannot be treated, then it is better to remove the plant from the site.

Viburnum can also be overcome by pests. Aphids are fought with a soap solution, and with viburnum leaf beetle - an infusion of garlic, onion or wormwood with soap. In early spring, the plant is treated with karbofos. If pests appear, you can use other chemicals sold in garden stores.

Pruning viburnum

Ornamental viburnum is most often grown as a spherical shrub, but sometimes as a standard tree. The shoots grow very quickly, up to 40 cm per year.

To form a ball, the bush is cut short in the second year of planting, leaving 2-3 buds, and a ball is formed from young strong shoots, pinching their growth point at a length of 30 cm.

To form a tree, only one powerful stem is left to grow, its lower lateral buds are removed, and the remaining shoots are removed. In the future, only branches from the apical buds are allowed to grow. To do this, after 2–3 years of growth of the main (single) stem, its crown is pinched at the desired height, for example 2 m, and a crown is formed from its side shoots, leaving a clean stem 1–1.2 m high.

In addition to pruning to form the bush, you will also need to remove lateral growth when it appears, as well as dried and broken branches. Once every 7–8 years you need to thin out the crown of the bush - such care helps maintain the healthy appearance of the ornamental shrub.

Reproduction of viburnum Buldenezh

Since the sterile flowers of this viburnum do not produce seeds, it can only be propagated vegetative way: layering, cuttings and dividing the bush.

For cuttings, shoots of this year are most often taken during summer pruning, but last year's shoots can also be used. Two pairs of buds are left on a cutting 7–9 cm long, lower leaves cut off completely, and the top ones - in half. The lower cut of the cutting should be oblique, and the upper cut should be straight. To accelerate root formation, the lower cut is treated with Kornevin, Heteroauxin or another growth stimulant. The cuttings are planted to a depth of 2 cm in a loose substrate (peat and sand in equal quantities), and a mini-greenhouse is made (a cap made of plastic bottles or lutrasil/film stretched over small arcs).

When propagating by layering in May-June, flexible young shoots are bent to the ground, placed in grooves up to 10 cm deep, pinned, covered with soil and often watered. The rooted seedling is cut off from the mother bush and left for some time in its original place or transplanted into a school.

As can be seen from the information above, viburnum Buldenezh does not require special attention. Planting and caring for it is no more difficult than caring for other garden crops, and the beauty of spring flowering pays off all the effort.

The shrub traditionally reaches a height of 2.5 meters, individual trees - 4 meters. Viburnum Buldenezh has a wide spreading crown. On the territory of Russia you can find a 50-year-old viburnum, which has a height of 6 meters, while the diameter of its crown is 4.5 meters. Ball-shaped inflorescences consist of flowers without pistils and stamens, that is, this variety of viburnum does not have reproductive organs, which does not allow it to reproduce by seeds. The flowers of the plant first have a greenish tint, then become snow-white, resembling a snow globe. During flowering, the flowers acquire a pink tint.

The flowering period is about a month. Large, wide leaves consist of 3 or 5 lobes. Common viburnum bears fruit with bright berries scarlet color, which are collected in an umbrella brush and have beneficial properties, viburnum Buldenezh does not bear fruit. It is worth noting that some varieties of viburnum have black fruits, which, on the contrary, are very poisonous.

According to botanists, caring for the viburnum Buldenezh, shown in the photo, primarily consists of watering in dry times and good feeding, at least once every 5 years. As for replanting, it can be done when necessary, without taking into account the time of year or the age of the plant. Some experts believe that feeding a plant, if the soil on which it grows is not fertile enough, should be given attention more often than once every 5 years. So, it is necessary to feed viburnum Buldenezh before the beginning of the growing season and before the period of shedding leaves. In the spring months, to feed plants per 1 sq. meter, take a mixture consisting of 50 grams of nitrogen, 30 grams of calcium and 40 grams of phosphorus.

When growing this garden culture at home summer cottage you may have some difficulties. Certain diseases pose a certain danger when growing this type of viburnum, which is shown in the photo. They should be taken into account when caring for shrubs, especially immediately after planting. Bulldenezh and other varieties of viburnum can get sick due to insect pests that mercilessly destroy the leaves and wonderful flowers of viburnum. Often these types of pests include leaf beetles, viburnum bark beetles, comma scale insects and aphids. They are fought with care, even before the plant blooms, which we can see in the photo, using special chemical solutions and drugs:

  • organophosphorus compound chlorophos at a concentration of 0.2%;
  • insecticidal preparation "Karbofos" - 0.1%;
  • biological product "Fitoverm";
  • organophosphorus drug "Actellik";
  • "Decis".

Viburnum buldenezh for the garden

Another disease that can cause harm to Buldenezh and negatively affect other varieties of viburnum is powdery mildew. Those who care for the plant should take this into account. The causative agent of this disease is a fungus that infects mainly young parts of plants, damaging green shoots, emerging leaves, petioles and newly formed berries. The disease progresses during dry and hot weather. It is at this time that even a slightly wilted plant becomes susceptible. The foliage of an infected shrub looks as if it is covered with lime. In just 2 weeks after the first signs of infection appear, powdery mildew can cover every young leaf of the plant, petioles and shoot tips.

Of course, it is easier to prevent a disease by taking care of it than to treat it. Thus, to prevent powdery mildew, infusions such as garlic, onion and tobacco are used. These folk, but proven, remedies achieve effective disease prevention. If the disease could not be avoided, and even proper preventive care did not help, then at the end of flowering the plants should be treated with an infusion prepared from ash: 3 kg of ash is infused in 10 liters of water. Also for these purposes, a solution of soda ash and soap is used: for 10 liters of water, take 50 grams of soda and laundry soap, grated on a coarse grater. The procedure for treating diseased viburnum Buldenezh must be repeated up to 3 times, keeping a weekly interval between them.

Decorative viburnum becomes a real chic decoration garden plot. Beautiful plant indispensable in landscape design. It looks great on any photo.
