Speedtest net by ookla global speed test. Checking Internet speed: overview of methods

Your Internet connection may become slower for several reasons, including your ISPs artificially throttling your bandwidth contrary to the terms of your data plan.

Speed testing services can help determine whether your ISP is to blame for slow connection speeds, but only if the user understands how they work.

While watching a popular TV series, did the main characters begin to stutter? Does it take forever to load a new video on YouTube? Have you started thinking about purchasing a more expensive network connection plan?

Recent research shows that some Internet service providers provide lower connection speeds than they initially advertise. According to a report by popular IT blog WSJ Digits, 41 percent of ISPs do not meet their obligations to maintain contracted Internet connection speeds.

Fortunately, there are many free online service ov checking the speed of broadband access. On the other hand, the results of different tests on the same machine can vary significantly. Here are 2 of the most important advice Things to keep in mind when you run any connection performance test:

  1. Never rely on single measurements from one speed test (see explanation below).
  2. Local wireless network may have a large number of potential “holes” that will affect the upload and download speed. Therefore, it is recommended to run tests on computers directly connected to the network infrastructure using an Ethernet cable.

What Network Performance Tests Measure

Almost all Internet speed tests measure three parameters: download speed from the network, upload speed to a remote server, and latency. The tests themselves are extremely simple: upload and download speeds are calculated by measuring the time required to transfer one file or several files various sizes between your computer and the Internet server.

The network latency test (also known as “ping”) measures the time it takes for one packet of data to reach a remote server and then return to the computer. Latency is a critical parameter when using time-sensitive applications, such as online trading clients or interactive online games.

In most cases, you will notice that the upload speed to the server is several times lower than the download speed. This situation occurs because Internet providers have long chosen operating protocols in which downloading is prioritized over uploading.

This mode of operation was especially relevant in the first years of using the Internet: then users uploaded several times less content than they downloaded. Now this trend has formally continued, but to a lesser extent. Now we download gigabytes of streaming music and movies, but at the same time we use video calls, IP telephony and file backup to cloud servers.

In the future, ISPs may reconsider the allocation of download and upload bandwidth. However, nowadays, downloading data to a computer is much faster than uploading data from a computer to a server.

Check your Comcast provider with 8 speed test services

Using Internet connection speed tests is very simple. For example, on the Bandwidth Place website the user is asked to simply press a large start button. Many services also offer to select the web server used for testing.

Figure 1. Like many other similar services, Bandwidth Place offers to find out the connection parameters in one click

It is also worth remembering that for some reasons, the results of connection speed measurements by different services may differ significantly. Here are the results of 8 popular connection speed tests.

The author of the article, Patrick Marshall, lives in Seattle, where the choice of Internet providers is limited. The Comcast subscription used offers download speeds of 50 megabits per second and upload speeds of 5 megabits per second. The numbers in the table below reflect the results of measurements of network parameters at noon. Many tests produce completely different measurement results at different times of the day.

In all but two of the tests, Comcast delivered on contract-promised speeds, although the differences between tests were significant. General results:

Results table

Service Incoming
(Mbit/sec)
Outgoing
(Mbit/sec)
Ping (ms)
Bandwidth Place 53.0 6.11 18
CNET Internet Speed Test 48.85 (n/a) (n/a)
XFINITY Speed Test 59.3 6.1 8
DSL Reports Speedtest 49.6 5.9 66
Geek Squad 16.8 5.96 106
Ookla Speedtest 59.4 6.15 8
SpeedOf.Me Lite 65.0 6.7 11
Visualware MySpeed 56.1 5.95 26

To summarize, download speeds ranged from 16.8 Mbps to 65 Mbps, with the final difference exceeding 48 Mbps, equivalent to 75 percent. Latency ranged from 8 milliseconds to 106 milliseconds, with even more variation in this test. Even if we discard the results of measurements by the Geek Squad service, the download speed had a spread of 25 percent.

Is one test more accurate than another?

For many reasons, it is impossible to accurately measure Internet connection speed or even say that any service is more accurate than its competitors.

Firstly, the Internet is not a homogeneous structure, it is a huge combination of different routers, servers, cables, etc. Typically, each browser connection to a web server uses a different network router and goes through different Internet traffic management devices - each of which affects the speed of the connection.

Moreover, Internet users may use different browsers or FTP applications at different times. Some browsers may have integrated accelerators that use multi-threaded HTTP channels, while others do not have this functionality. Thus, there is no constancy of multiple factors for Internet connections.

The speed tests themselves are also inconsistent. These services use three types of tests - download speed, upload speed and latency - but the tests themselves can vary greatly. Some services use a single file to measure speeds, while their competitors may use sets of files different sizes. Even the format of the test can affect the final results, depending on the protocols used, the size of the packets and the amount of service information they contain.

Some services transfer files in a single stream, others use multi-threaded transfer. In most cases, it is unknown whether a test using a single transmission stream will be more accurate than a multi-stream service.

While some tests always use the same server for measurements, others may search for the fastest server or allow the user to independently select a specific server.

Connection performance may vary significantly depending on the location of the servers used in testing. As a general rule, the further the server is physically from your location, the lower the network speeds - especially latency. Some tests, for example SpeedOf.me, pass data through several servers located in different places during measurements.

Figure 2. Graphical representation measurement results in the SpeedOf.me service

Delay time may also affect throughput network because most Internet traffic is associated with TCP's congestion window. Essentially, the system waits for confirmation that packets have been received before sending subsequent data. The longer the delay time, the slower the transmission.

The time of day can also seriously affect your connection speed. During business hours, corporate machines may experience a serious drop in speeds, because... multiple users share the same Internet connection. Home users will notice slowdowns in the evening hours when you and your neighbors are uploading videos to YouTube or streaming movies.

You should also keep in mind that test results may vary depending on the number of other users simultaneously using the local ISP site. For end users, speed may be reduced by any device connected to the network in a separate apartment building, for corporate users, distortion in the results can be caused by their colleagues using the same network connection. If you notice a strong drop in speed after 15:00, students have probably returned from classes and switched to Internet services.

Most Internet speed testing services download a small application. Some resources use Java, others use Flash. The newest services use HTML5 technology, which does not require applets to be installed on your computer. In theory, HTML 5-based tests should be more accurate due to the lack of transfer of overhead information to the local application. Ookla says its Flash test offsets the protocol overhead and buffering of the application before publishing the final results.

Figure 3. Ookla has a relatively simple interface for displaying speeds and latency

Conclusion: No matter what assumptions an Internet speed test service makes, it cannot create a test that will reflect the real situation. On this moment does not exist practical way Take into account your specific computer configuration and internet usage - especially when internet connections vary by location, session and web resource.

What to do if the connection speed is lower than expected?

Given the limitations of network speed tests, how can you determine whether the performance is up to par with what you're paying for? tariff plan?

Tests can give a rough estimate real speeds Internet connections, if you launch them several times at different times of the day and on different days of the week. If possible, run the test on different computers to get any consistent results. Performing tests multiple times will minimize distortions associated with local PC and network problems.

Let us say once again that to carry out tests you need to use a direct connection from the computer to the network infrastructure using an Ethernet cable. Various types wireless connections can seriously reduce actual speeds.

Run tests on different services and discard the highest and lowest results. If most of the tests show lower performance than stated by the provider, it's time to contact technical support.

Have you ever asked yourself the question - how to check the Internet speed? And this question is really important, because we pay money for the Internet, and sometimes quite a lot. And it is simply necessary to be sure that you are not being deceived.

Now, every day, the number of Internet users is growing, and accordingly, many new companies are appearing that provide their services. Often, people pay quite a lot of money to use the Internet. But a non-professional is unlikely to distinguish a speed of 10 Mb per second from a speed of 20 Mb per second, and if the difference is not visible, why pay more? There are several services that will show you how to find out internet speed.

How to check Internet speed on a computer? A little clarification...

To begin with, take it for granted that it is impossible to absolutely accurately measure the speed of access to the Global Network. Internet- this is a constantly changing environment, and such a concept as “constancy” cannot be applied to it. In addition, if you noticed, modern Internet operators in contracts indicate a phrase like: “speed up to X Mbit/sec,” that is, in reality the speed will be less than this X value.

There are two Internet speeds:

  • reception speed
  • recoil speed

The ratio of these two speeds plays a very important role, both in determining the speed of the Internet and in assessing its quality. The connection channel to the World Wide Web can be synchronous or asynchronous, symmetric or asymmetric.

Every Internet user should understand that the Internet connection speed will be different for each direction. For example, you are in Kyiv. Connection speed to Kyiv - 10 Mbit/sec, to Russia - 6 Mbit/sec, to Paris - 2 Mbit/sec, to America - 1 Mbit/sec. However, such a situation is not an indication that your provider is somehow deceiving you. And believe me, this is a reasonable "price". You pay several times less for access to the World Wide Web than legal entities.

Below, I will tell you about several ways to check speed. Read everything to the end and choose the method that is convenient for you, or better yet, try everything.

How to find out the Internet speed on a computer? Several ways.

For the average user, it may be enough to simply estimate the speed of the Internet connection without directly measuring it. Why do most of us use the Internet? For, and music.

Here is one of the most simple ways. Call a friend from your computer (for example, via Skype) whose stated Internet speed is at least 4-8 Mbit/sec. If during communication the image is normal, no wheezing or extraneous sounds are heard, then the speed of the connection channel is normal. To evaluate your connection speed, you can also use download managers and . Of course, it is impossible to draw exact conclusions this way - the download speed will depend on the source. To estimate the speed, you can use the download graph in the Bittorrent application.

To estimate the current speed, you can use. To call it, you need to press the three key combination “CTRL+ALT+DELETE”. Go to the "performance" tab, and then to your connection (for example, Wi-fi). The graph shows the change in speed while downloading a file from a torrent.

This is what the task manager looks like in the operating room Windows system 8, but in earlier operating systems the principle remains the same.

Checking Internet speed using special Internet services.

In order to evaluate the speed of your channel, you can use the services of special services.

How to check Internet speed using Yandex?

Yandex has a special service that helps to understand this issue. The service is called Yandex.Internetometer. His only problem is that he doesn’t always show the truth, or rather greatly exaggerates. It is very easy to use. Go to the parcel website above and click on the “Measure speed” button.

After which the verification will begin.

When it finishes, a picture with the results will appear.

But I’ll tell you honestly, here they are not showing the truth, because... My Internet speed is half as fast. That's why, if you want to know, how to check internet speed In real life, I advise you to use another service.

Hello, dear readers of the blog site. There are a lot of online services that allow you to do this, and they will be discussed below. But often all this is not needed - all that is required is quickly test your internet channel and understand how well it corresponds to the tariff plan for which you pay money to the provider.

Not long ago, the bourgeois service “nPerf Speed Test” offered me to install their script on the site. It works very clearly and does an excellent job of checking the quality of your connection with global network. Just click on the “Start testing” button just below (this is not a screenshot, but a completely working speedometer).

At first data download speed is measured from the network (usually this test is the most important for most users), then goes recoil speed measurement, and in the end it is calculated ping, i.e. delays in response when accessing any server on the Internet.

Yes, actually, what can I say. Try it yourself. Just above is the window of this online meter and you just need to click on the button.

Measure your internet speed on your computer right here

Despite the fact that the above speedometer is extremely easy to use and, importantly, is completely translated into Russian, it is worth mentioning several nuances associated with its use. The test usually takes one or two minutes (depending on the speed of your connection), after which you can see the test results in the same window:

You will see the main indicators in the right column:

  1. Download speedmost important characteristic for those who often download something “heavy” from the Internet.
  2. Unloading— testing the back channel through which you will upload files to the network. It is important for those who post a lot of something on the Internet, for example, upload videos to YouTube, (on,) or something else heavy, or in large quantities. This is also important when active work with cloud services. Although in the latter case both speed values are important.
  3. Delay- this is essentially the good old one, which is very important for those who play online. It will determine the response speed, i.e. reaction time to your actions (the quality of the Internet channel is tested). If the delay is long, it will be difficult or even impossible to play.

I have an Internet provider MGTS (Gpon) and a tariff with a declared channel width of 100 Mbit. As can be seen from the speed measurement graphs, such a figure did not work out in either direction. In principle, this is normal, because my signal transmission from the router to the computer goes according to electrical network, which apparently contains leads. In addition, there are several other Internet users working in the apartment besides me, and it’s beyond my power to force them to stop.

Let us return, however, to our measurement tool. On the right side of its window you will see the name of your provider and the IP address of your computer. Under the “Start testing” button there is wrench, by clicking on which you can select speed units:

The default is megabits per second, but you can select megabytes, as well as kilobytes or kilobits. , can be viewed via the link. In general, the speed in megabytes will be about eight to nine times less than in megabits. In theory, it should be 8 times, but there are service packets that eat up part of the channel speed.

Let's go over the meter's capabilities and differences from competitors (we'll talk about competitors below):

  1. Like other similar online meters, it runs on Flash, but does not require any additional plugins - it works in all browsers including mobile ones
  2. This speed test is developed in HTML5 and can measure channels wider than Gbit/s, which is not available to many other online services.
  3. You can check any type of connection including WiMAX, WiFi and local networks

Yes, also this speed test allows you to choose a place, where the data will be downloaded from and where it will be sent, by the transmission speed of which you will judge the quality of your Internet channel. By default, the server (?) closest to your current location is selected for testing (it’s not difficult).

But the program may make a mistake, or for some reason you yourself will need to measure the quality of the connection between your computer and a server from another country. This is easy to do by simply clicking on the corresponding line at the bottom of the window (see screenshot above).

How to check internet speed on your phone

In principle, you can do exactly the same. Open this page on your mobile phone, then click on the “Start testing and wait for the result” button at the beginning of it. The meter script works quite correctly on mobile devices and displays the characteristics of the forward and reverse Internet channels, as well as the response speed (ping).

If this method seems somewhat inconvenient to you, you can try put it on your mobile phone application"Speed Test" by nPerf. It's quite popular (half a million installations) and largely repeats what you've already seen:

But after testing the speed of the forward and reverse channels, as well as measuring ping, the Speed Test application also measures the loading time of popular social networks (web surfing) and determines how Internet connection is suitable for watching streaming video(streaming) of various quality (from low to HD). Based on the test results, a summary table is generated and an overall score (in parrots) is given.

Where else can you measure your Internet speed?

Below I want to give examples of free online services that allow you to measure the speed of your Internet connection, find out my or your IP address from which you access the network, determine your location, check a site or file for a virus, find out if the required port is open for you on the computer and much more.

The most famous of them are Speedtest (speedtest.net), Ya.Internetometer (internet.yandex.ru), as well as the universal online service 2IP (2ip.ru), which, in addition to measuring connection speed and determining the IP address, can do many different things , up to anonymous (anonim) surfing the Internet. Let's look at them all in order.

Speedtest (speedtest.net)

The most popular online service for testing Internet speed bears the proud name Speedtest(from the word speed - speed).

As a result of its use, you will find out the incoming and outgoing speeds of your Internet connection. However, you can experience the capabilities of a full-fledged tool only by visiting the developers’ website. It is located at SpeedTest.net(speedtest point no), and not.ru, because in the latter case you will end up on an indecent resource.

I got acquainted with the speed test as soon as I connected my first unlimited tariff, because I wanted to check whether my new provider was deceiving me about the speed of the channel provided. It was only later that I became interested in the more advanced capabilities of 2ip and others like it, which will be discussed in the continuation of this publication.

To activate the speed test All you have to do is click on the “Start” button. Although you can pre-select the location of the server from which the check will be carried out (the “Change server” button):

True, I need them old design I liked it much better. Previously, measuring Internet speed in a speed test was done very clearly (the transfer of data between the selected city and your computer was displayed) and waiting for the result did not cause negative emotions:

Now it's completely boring (bring back the old SpeedTest design!):

Internet meter from Yandex

If the results of the speed test in the Speedtest do not suit you or seem unreliable (or maybe your flash just won’t start), then the Yandex online service will come to your aid - (formerly it was called Yandex Internet - internet.yandex.ru):

Immediately after entering the site, you will see the unique address of your computer from which you accessed the Internetometer, as well as other summary information about your browser, screen resolution and location (determined based on IP).

For that, to determine the speed of your Internet connection, it will be enough to click on this Yandex Internet service the button in the form of a green line "Measure" and wait a minute until the test finishes:

As a result, you will find out how well your channel corresponds to the characteristics declared by the provider, and you will also be able to receive a code for publishing test results. In general, the Internetometer service from Yandex is simple to the point of disgrace, but it performs its main task (measuring channel width or, in other words, connection speed) quite well.

Testing speed in 2ip and Ukrtelecom

I have been familiar with 2ip for quite a long time, but at the time when I was just starting to use it, I was little interested in all its capabilities that could be useful to webmasters. Or maybe these opportunities weren’t there before.

When you go to the 2 ip main page, you will immediately have the opportunity to find out and use a number of other mini-services:

Well, and among other things, you can measure speed of your Internet in 2IP. Before starting testing, turn off all downloads, close the tabs in the online video, after which you can fill out the fields with the channel width declared by the Internet provider for downloading and uploading, or you can just forget about it and click on the “Test” button:

It will take some time to check the incoming and outgoing speed of your Internet connection, after which you will be able to evaluate the test results, and at the same time receive a code for inserting a widget with the measurement results, for example, into a post on a forum or somewhere else:

You can check the speed of your Internet connection not only in the services described above, but also in a number of others. For example, Speedtest Ukrtelecom— a very laconic, I must say, online service. Nothing superfluous - just speed and ping numbers:

Want to know how fast your Internet connection actually is? Measure your Internet connection speed and see how fast your download, upload, ping and jitter are.

Numbers that don't lie

You pay the provider for an Internet connection, which must, within the chosen tariff, meet certain technical parameters. These include not only download speed, but also transfer speed along with latency or response (ping).

In practice, however, the measured values may differ significantly from those shown on paper. Sometimes long-term, sometimes only for a short period of time due to a technical problem or aggregation - the shared capacity of an Internet connection between multiple users. Speedtest will help identify the differences and show you what your connection is really like. And all this within a few tens of seconds and without complex settings.

How does Internet speed measurement work?

From the user's point of view, everything is simple. Directly in the web browser, click on the measurement button and wait. Before you run speedtest, it is important to turn off all tasks, applications and devices that might be using your Internet connection. This would affect the results and you would not learn anything, or the conclusions would not have the required accuracy.

The technical solutions and background of speedtest themselves are complex, but in a very simplistic way, the test simulates the situation where you are uploading and downloading data. Based on how quickly these transfers occur, measured values are calculated. You can test the speed of up to thirty test servers located in different geographical locations. What data will you find out?

Connection speed under magnifying glass

The test results will present a series key values, by which you can evaluate your connection and immediately choose, for example, a different plan or a different provider. The main values include:

Download

Download will show you the download speed of your device in Mbit/s. The higher the value, the better, because the faster the loading time, the less time you will have to wait until you load a web page, or an attachment for example Email. Internet connections at home are usually asymmetrical. This means that the download speed for the user is faster than the upload speed.

Upload

The specified upload speed is another main value that the test results will show. Upload again expresses in Mbps how quickly you can upload Internet data on a given connection. The higher the number, as with download, the better. Fast loading is important for e.g. Reserve copy to the cloud or streaming video. The higher the value, the faster you can upload data from the device to the Internet.

Ping

The three main parameters end with a response (ping) in milliseconds. On the contrary, the lower, the better. Its importance is especially important for online game players who need a fast response from the server when playing so that there is no delay in the game. A relatively fast ping can be considered anything below 40 ms, and a really good result is everything in the range of 0-10 ms.

Jitter

Part of the results is jitter. It expresses the fluctuations in ping value in milliseconds, and therefore the stability of the connection. The result should be as low as possible. The higher the jitter value in the test, the less stable the Internet connection.

Speedtest results will show in detail how many MB of data you can theoretically download and upload in a certain period of time. You will easily find whether the specified data volume and thus the speed is sufficient. It's useful, isn't it? Blog and website owners have the opportunity to embed a connection speed test for free directly on the site via an embed code.

Check your connection regularly

Connecting to the Internet is certainly not the case when what happened yesterday still works today. Don't forget to repeat the speedtest from time to time or use it whenever you suspect problems with your connection speed.

He will respond to you immediately and you have the opportunity to decide what your next steps will be. In any case, there is no point in wasting time with a slow Internet nowadays.

Many people working online have repeatedly asked themselves the question: “How to check the speed of my computer?” After all, it’s no secret that to ensure correct work Using a computer on the Internet is possible only if the speed of the Internet connection corresponds to the optimal parameters specified. You can check it using the speed test.

What affects Internet speed?

First, you need to understand what factors affect the speed of your Internet connection. There are many of them:
  • The speed of the server from which you are trying to download something or want to access the site;
  • If the computer is connected to local network via a router, you should take into account the speed of the router itself;
  • How many programs (including antiviruses) are running on the computer at the moment.
In most cases, the speed of the Internet is affected by the speed of the server, as well as its location, and how loaded it is. It is worth noting that for each server this figure may be different and it depends on the capabilities of the particular server.

How to most accurately check Internet speed?

You can measure Internet speed with maximum accuracy if you take into account several important points. To do this, before checking you should:
  1. Connect the cable to the computer via a network adapter;
  2. Close all programs (leave one browser with a tab to check Internet speed);
  3. Disable antivirus;
  4. Launch the task manager and see if there are any network downloads.
To increase the accuracy of the Internet speed test, the measurement must be performed three times.

How to find out the Internet speed using an online service?

Internet speed depends on the information being transmitted; it is measured in bits. The provider usually presents this value in megabits or kilobits, so it is often difficult for the average user to understand how accurate these numbers are.

You can check your Internet speed using speed testa, which is located on this page. This service will help you find out how correctly the Internet provider fulfills its obligations towards customers.
So, for example, the contract specifies a speed of 256 kilobits, but with the help of simple calculations you found out that the actual downloading of documents is 16 kilobytes/sec. This gives reason to doubt the integrity of the provider, and therefore you just need to measure the speed of the Internet.

How to perform an Internet speed test?

Very easy! You just need to run the program and wait a while while it performs testing. Several checks in a row may give different meaning speed, the program takes the average value. You don't need any technical knowledge, you just need to wait a little.

Not satisfied with the Internet speed? You can change your provider right on this page. Why pay for air? It’s better to entrust kilobytes of your information to a reliable service.

Look at the tariffs and choose a provider that matches your idea of good internet.

Answers to questions about Internet speed tests

This is especially often said by providers who have far from the best results from such speed tests. Instead of Speedtest, they offer to download the file from their ftp server. But in this case, this is no longer a test of Internet speed, but only of the provider’s internal network. We are interested in whether the provider is saving too much on external channels, and how quickly files will be downloaded from Ukrainian and foreign sites.

Internet speed depends both on your provider's network and on the route to the site you need. It just so happens that home Internet users create the main load on Internet channels. Typically, this load increases significantly after 18-19 hours (when people come from work), reaches a maximum at 21-22 hours and falls only late at night. So the reality that every Internet user faces is an evening slowdown in speed.

Everything is determined by the communication technology used: - Dial-UP Internet, Internet access via an analog modem, via telephone line. For this archaic technology, a normal Internet speed test is 20-40 Kbps. - Mobile Internet using GPRS/EDGE technology, via a USB modem - Speedtest of such Internet should show 50-150 Kb/s. This Internet is offered by all operators mobile communications- MTS, Kyivstar (Beeline), Life:) - 3G Internet, wireless wired Internet using third generation technology. There are two types - UMTS HSDPA and CDMA EVDO. Normal speed 3G Internet - 0.5-1 Megabits per second, 1-2 Megabits with an external amplifying antenna. Such Internet is offered by providers - Intertelecom, PEOPLEnet, TriMob (formerly Ukrtelecom OGO! Mobile, Utel), CDMAua and MTS Connect 3G. In addition, the new Rev.B technology from Intertelecom is designed to increase the speed of the Internet - it allows you to do speed tests of 3-7 megabits per second. - 4G/WiMAX Internet, or Internet using fourth generation technology. Good speed 4G Internet - from 3 to 7 megabits per second. Wireless Internet WiMAX is offered by FreshTel and Giraffe (formerly Intellecom). - Satellite Internet, by new technology TooWay. The speed surprisingly exactly corresponds to what is stated in the tariff; if 20 Mbit/s is promised, then this is a real 20 or even a little more. - Leased lines, wired Internet (Fiber, ADSL, DOCSIS). In most cases it is offered unlimited tariffs(no traffic restrictions), but with speed limits. So Internet Speedtest only shows this limitation. Typically this is 1, 2, 4, 10, 20, 100 or even 1000 megabits.
