Making a garage roof: types of roofing materials, photo materials. Garage roof – we make a reliable roof yourself! Assembling a metal garage with a gable roof

There are several design solutions for garage roofs. However, in order to minimize the necessary costs and get the most economical option, you need to choose the option of a pitched roof. Moreover, it can be attached to a residential building and provide direct access to the house.

The shed roof for the garage is widely used due to its simplicity, reliability and budget. The cost-effectiveness of this design is ensured by the shed roof of the garage itself and its technological characteristics.

Construction of a pitched garage roof

A pitched roof consists of:

  • the rafter system, which is the base on which all its components are attached and which absorbs the load on the roof;
  • sheathing, designed similarly to other types of roofs, which serves as a supporting surface for the roofing;
  • insulating materials designed to retain heat and protect against moisture;
  • roofing;
  • additional elements that strengthen the rafter system.

A garage on which a pitched roof is installed must have logs or mauerlat (beams) at the upper ends. They will become the support for the future rafter system. As a rule, they are attached to walls using wire through anchors that are driven into the wall or placed specifically in the masonry.

Garage roof truss system

The main element of the rafter system is the rafter (a wooden beam of a certain section). As is known, it can be

  • suspended (supported by ends);
  • layered (also has an intermediate load-bearing support).

If the span formed by the supporting walls is less than 4-5 m, as in the case of a garage, you can limit yourself to installing only horizontal elements (crossbars) on the rafter frame. At the junction of the mauerlat and rafters, sockets for fasteners are made. The rafters are installed in their position and securely secured with nails or anchors.

How to make a pitched garage roof practically

Considering the size of the garage, a simplified rafter system with horizontal rafters can be made for it. Wooden beams can be laid along or across the garage. However, a transverse arrangement is considered more appropriate. This arrangement is more advantageous, if only because the timber along the width of the garage can have a shorter length.

Beams for an average garage (about 4 m wide) have a cross-section of 100x50 mm; for a larger garage width it is better to use 100x60 mm or more. Beams are laid in increments of no more than one meter.

After completing the installation, the wooden beams must be fixed with screws or angles to the walls of the garage or subsequently laid with bricks.

Installation of sheathing and insulation for a pitched garage roof

As soon as the work on installing and securely fixing the beams is completed, they begin laying the sheathing. Both edged and unedged boards (shalevka) can serve as the material for the sheathing. Last option is considered optimal because it costs two times less than edged, and the final form is difficult to distinguish between them.

It is recommended to lay several edged boards, which usually come with shalevka, on the sides of the roof to eliminate gaps. If shalevka is used for flooring, it is cleared of bark. When laying and nailing, it is necessary to ensure that there are no large gaps. Compared to edged board flooring, of course, small gaps are possible, but this is not comparable to the difference in price of these materials. After insulation and filing, the gaps will become almost invisible.

The next stage is the installation of waterproofing, which should protect the interior of the garage from penetrating water. For these purposes they use various materials, say, roofing felt or special roofing films (hydrobarrier, eurobarrier).

The most budget option remains roofing felt. It is laid from the bottom up so that a small overlap of a couple of centimeters is formed. In this case, water that gets from under the roofing material will roll off without getting under the bottom, that is, the boards.

The roofing film is laid in the same way, secured with stainless nails or staples. Ruberoid is simply nailed down.

Laying roofing on a garage roof

Next, the garage roof is laid on a wooden deck. The choice of roofing materials for a pitched garage roof is quite large, and each material has its own individual characteristics and benefits.

  • Corrugated sheeting is resistant to precipitation and can be reused, although it is already relatively inexpensive.
  • Slate looks good, is easy to install, service life is 30-40 years, but is not always justified for small garages.
  • Seam roofing - strips of thin sheet metal They are easy to install and reliable, but this option is not cheap.
  • Roof tiles or metal tiles - more suitable for covering capital stone garages of large and medium size
  • Rolled materials (rubemast, roofing felt, roofing felt, etc.) are inexpensive, easy and quick to install and, most importantly, durable and effectively protect the room. If roofing felt can last up to 10-15 years, then its modern analogs can last up to 30-40 years on average.

Capital or frame technology for constructing a garage

Of the popular technologies existing today, two can be distinguished: capital and frame. Unlike the first, which requires a variety of building materials and equipment, the frame is based on technical components manufactured in the factory - it is only necessary to carry out final assembly.

A frame garage with a pitched roof has some advantages:

  • excellent thermal insulation,
  • fast construction,
  • cheap solution.

In addition, a frame garage does not require a massive foundation due to its lightweight walls.

Shed roof for garage: simple and economical

A shed roof for a garage does not require high skills in roof construction. However, it is better to entrust it to professionals, since the installation of a garage roof has

How to properly cover a garage roof with your own hands

Arrangement of the roof is a fundamentally important stage in the construction of a garage. To make a garage roof with your own hands, you need to wisely choose its shape and design, decide on the type and color of the roofing. Despite the fact that the garage is an auxiliary building, the configuration and shade of its roof are part of the architectural and landscape composition of the site, which has considerable aesthetic significance. We suggest you figure out how to properly make a garage roof so that it not only looks good against the background of its surroundings, but is also stable, reliable, and durable.

What roofing material to cover the garage roof with?

When selecting material for arranging a garage roof deck, take into account the shape, slope and expected service life of the roof, climatic conditions and financial aspect.

Types and features of roofing materials:

  • Ceramic and metal tiles. Durable and expensive material that requires professional installation.
  • Flexible tiles. Roll material at a budget price, easy to install, but characterized by a short service life.
  • Profiled sheeting. Low cost, light weight sheets, easy installation - the main advantages of the material. Disadvantages include poor thermal insulation ability, the possibility of corrosion, and noise.
  • Ondulin. Durable, lightweight, wear-resistant sheet material with an optimal price/durability ratio. A simplified installation scheme is one of the main reasons why most homeowners choose ondulin for self-construction of a garage roof.

Roof shape for a garage: nuances of choice

The configuration of the garage roof can be absolutely any, so an important point in its construction is the choice of shape, design and calculation of the load, and calculation of the amount of material required. Flat or single-pitch with a slope, gable gable or mansard, hip or hipped - the roof design significantly affects the labor intensity and final cost of building a garage.

Advantages of a pitched roof as an option for building a garage with your own hands:

  • Affordability.
  • Reduced volumes of structural and roofing materials.
  • Rational use of building space.
  • Simplicity and speed of installation work.

The roof structure includes:

  • Mauerlat.
  • Rafter system.
  • Insulating layers (moisture, steam, heat insulation).
  • Lathing.
  • Roofing flooring.

Mauerlat installation

The installation of the roof begins with the installation of a mauerlat - a wooden beam with a section of 150 × 100 / 150 × 150 mm. Muerlat plays a key role in redistributing the load of the weight of the roof onto the walls of the garage, serves as a support and improves strength parameters roofing structure. Before installation, the timber must be treated with fire retardants and antiseptics to protect against fire, prevent rotting and damage by wood borers. Having laid several layers of roofing felt for waterproofing, the mauerlat is fixed along the upper edge of the walls, flush with their internal plane, and then additional brickwork is made on the outside. The Mauerlat is fastened to the wall using staples, pins, fittings, and wire.

Quite often a simplified method of installing a Mauerlat is used, using instead of timber edged board 150×50 mm. The first row of boards is secured along the top of the walls with anchor bolts no less than 200 mm long, the next row is nailed with 100 mm nails. This method good because of the absence of embedded elements and the simplified process of raising boards to a height in comparison with timber.

Installation of the truss structure

The rafter system is the frame of a pitched garage roof, which evenly distributes the load from wind, precipitation, and the weight of the roofing material. When covering a garage with a span of up to 4500 mm, trusses without struts are used, in other cases - with struts. The pitch of the rafters affects the load-bearing capacity of the frame and the reliability of the roof, but an unreasonably short distance will make it heavier and increase the load on the walls and foundation. Too large a pitch will reduce the resistance of the garage roof external influences. As a rule, the installation pitch of the rafters is calculated based on the dimensions and weight of the roof deck module.

As rafters when installing a garage roof, a beam with a cross-section of 100-200 mm by 50 mm is traditionally used, such a length that after arranging the roof deck, an overhang of at least 200 mm will form. During installation rafter legs cut into the crown of the Mauerlat with a double tooth or secured with studs, bolts, metal corners/ plates. Steam and moisture-proof membranes are laid overlapping the top of the rafters, securing the edges of the insulating material with staples or tape.

Installation of sheathing and roofing

The lathing gives the roof structure the required rigidity and serves as the basis for laying the roofing covering. The sheathing is mounted perpendicular to the rafters, installing wooden slats 50×50 mm in 100 mm increments for roll materials, with a distance of 500-800 mm - for sheets. The roofing material is laid in accordance with the technological scheme recommended by the manufacturer - this is, as a rule, a series of operations to secure the coating to the surface of the sheathing.

We build a simple roof for a house, garage or bathhouse with our own hands

Having completed the construction of the walls, it is time to think about the structure that crowns the building. If we're talking about about a small country house, garage or bathhouse, then her choice is not difficult to make. The simplest roof for such objects is single or gable. It can be calculated and built on your own, without involving a team of carpenters.

In this article we will look at common options for roofing structures and talk about the important features of their selection and installation.

Types of simple roofs and their main elements

Any roof consists of a supporting frame and a protective roofing covering.

The frame includes the following elements:

  • Rafters - inclined beams (serve as the load-bearing basis of the roof).
  • Ridge beam (connects the upper connecting points of the rafters).
  • Lathing - flooring made of boards or OSB boards, laid on the rafters and serving as the basis for the roofing material.
  • Counter grille - used when installing warm roof(creates an air gap for ventilation of the insulation).
  • Mauerlat - wooden beam (mounted on longitudinal walls). The lower parts of the rafters (rafter legs) are attached to it.
  • Vertical posts, horizontal ties and struts (used to strengthen the truss structure).
  • Fillers are boards nailed to the lower ends of the rafters to create a roof overhang.

The design of a simple roof for a house is determined by several factors:

  • width of the span to be covered;
  • appointment attic space(residential or non-residential, walkable or non-passable);
  • type of interfloor covering (wooden beams, reinforced concrete panels).

If the width of the building is small (up to 4.5 meters), and there are no plans to arrange living space in the attic, then you can choose the option of a pitched roof. It is economical and easy to install.

The rafters of such a roof can be supported directly on the walls. To do this, one of them needs to be made higher than the other. This will create the slope necessary for rainwater to drain.

If you decide to install a pitched roof on walls of the same level, then to create a slope, you need to include wooden posts in its design. After installation is completed, they are sheathed with siding, OSB board or blockhouse.

For asbestos-cement slate, the roof slope must be at least 22 degrees. For metal tiles, ondulin, and bitumen tiles, the roof slope should be at least 15 degrees. When calculating a simple pitched roof, remember that snow load is a serious factor. To reduce it, it is recommended to make the slope steeper. Otherwise, you will have to increase the cross-section of the rafters and sheathing, which will lead to an increase in the cost of the structure.

If the span width is from 4.5 to 6 meters, then the rafters need to be reinforced with braces (inclined racks made of timber). They will reduce the deflection of the rafter legs under the influence snow load. The lower ends of the braces are embedded in the masonry, and when using vertical support posts, they are attached to them using staples, nails or jagged metal plates.

Shed roofs are most often used for small structures such as garages, sheds, bathhouses or gazebos. Gable design with a large elevation angle - best option for arranging an attic space.

Main docking points

The main condition for the strength of any roof is the proper joining of all its parts. Therefore, when drawing up a sketch drawing, you need to pay attention to the nodes (connection of the mauerlat to the wall, rafters to the ridge and floor beams).

The installation of a simple roof begins with laying a horizontal wooden beam - a mauerlat, on which the rafters will rest. It is attached to the masonry through threaded steel anchors (in brick walls) or to studs concreted in an armored belt (gas silicate masonry, expanded clay concrete, foam block).

The floor beams are fixed to the wall using anchor pins, and the Mauerlat is attached to them with nails or long screws.

We also note that the roof of a small house, barn or garage can be installed without a Mauerlat, fixing the lower ends of the rafters directly to the floor beams.

The next important unit is fastening the upper ends of the rafters to each other and connecting them to the ridge beam.

There are several ways to create this node. The rafter beams can be connected with a bolt and tightened with a nut (node 1). You can use a piece of OSB board (node 2) or secure them with a metal toothed plate (node 3). For closer contact of the rafters with the ridge beam, notches are made on them.

It should be noted that ridge beams, which increase structural rigidity, are most often used on large roofs. It is also installed in buildings with gables made of brick, block or logs, which serve as supporting walls for it. When building a small bathhouse, garage or country house, you can do without this element. A small roof will be provided with sufficient rigidity by lathing or decking made from OSB boards.

If you are planning to make a simple roof with your own hands, you should familiarize yourself with the recommended sections of rafter legs.

The cross-sectional dimensions of other elements of a simple roof can be taken from table No. 2

Features of constructing a simple roof

The installation of the roof begins after the completion of the walls, installation of beams or floor slabs. Having aligned the outer rafters, they are attached to beams or mauerlat and fixed with temporary ties. After this, a beacon cord is pulled between them. Ordinary rafters are placed along it and secured one by one using lathing.

If there is a capital pediment, installation is simplified, since the ridge beam laid on it serves as a support and beacon for installing the rafters.

Installing a roof frame at height is a labor-intensive task. When erecting a small roof, it is more convenient to assemble roof trusses on the ground. In this case, on the walls you will only have to connect them using lathing into a single structure. Having assembled one truss, it can be used as a template for marking and cutting rafters, tie rods and beams.

When preparing to build a roof, be sure to do detailed diagram indicating the dimensions of all elements and detailed study nodes It will be useful to you for calculating the purchased lumber and will help you complete the installation efficiently and quickly.

If the attic space is residential, then the roof structure needs to include not only insulation, vapor barrier, but also a counter-lattice - a wooden block with a cross-section of 30x50 mm. It is nailed to the rafters on top of the vapor barrier film to create a ventilation gap, and the main sheathing is attached on top. Without this “trifle,” the insulation will become wet from diffusion moisture in the cold season, and the wooden parts of the structure will begin to rot.

If a solid OSB board deck is used when installing an insulated roof, then a counter-lattice is placed under it.

To protect the walls from rainwater, any roof needs overhangs. For a lean-to structure, they are made not only in the lower part, but also in the upper part. If the length of the rafter legs is not enough to form eaves overhangs, then they are extended by nailing “filly” boards.

The minimum size of roof overhangs must be at least 20 cm. To protect the gables from moisture, the length of the roof on each side is increased by 20-30 cm, creating front overhangs. The ends and lower planes of the overhangs are sheathed with wind boards.

A simple roof for a house, garage or bathhouse - single-pitched and double-pitched structures

Features and options for building a simple roof for a country house, bathhouse or garage with your own hands. Schemes, photos and videos of construction work.

It’s not difficult to build a simple garage roof with your own hands. But to do this correctly, you need to prepare well in advance. After all, you will have to take into account a number important points– when and why to do insulation, whether a vapor barrier is needed and what to do to eliminate possible leaks. In addition, depending on the condition and location of the building, the construction strategy will differ significantly.

What should you think about before installing a roof?

The first thing you need to decide is the purpose of the garage. If it is unheated and will be used only for storing the car, the roof can be anything as long as it does not leak. But if the garage is planned to be warm or will be warmed up from time to time, used as a workshop or a local “café for car enthusiasts”, the roof must be insulated!
Uninsulated metal roof will condense, providing an unforgettable indoor rain experience in winter. A wooden or concrete one will heat up, melting the snow outside. And this is fraught with ice stalactites and stalagmites, which will have to be knocked down regularly. And it’s good if the roof slope is on the back wall, and not in front of the gate.

If you have a hood, it is also better to insulate it and raise it above the roof - so as not to drown the same snow.

Don't forget about minimum inclination with mandatory drainage for flat roofs. Otherwise, rain and snow may linger in uneven areas, which cannot be avoided during self-construction. And this is fraught with possible leaks or destruction of the roof in a few years.

And, of course, it is better to correctly assess your strengths in advance and draw up an estimate. Since sometimes the cheap option is not suitable due to its complexity in the device with my own hands, and expensive material can be replaced with something cheaper. After all, a garage does not require a special margin of safety and high environmental friendliness of the roof.

Do-it-yourself concrete roof for a garage

The simplest option is to lay concrete slabs. But you can’t do it without a crane. If its use is impossible for some reason, you will have to do concrete screed on one's own.
For this you will need:

Among the tools you should think about in advance:

It greatly simplifies working with concrete, especially if your hand is not yet full, as is clearly shown in the video:

Pouring a concrete garage roof

So, all the materials are stored, the tools are ready and you can start building the roof. For this:

  1. Floor beams - pipes, channels or I-beams - are laid on the walls. In the first two options, the roof will be poured on top. If the beams are made of an I-beam, boards or metal sheets are laid on its lower edge, onto which concrete will be poured. When installing an insulated roof, foam plastic can be laid under the screed.
  2. The reinforcing mesh is knitted. It is important not to forget that the rods should not touch the formwork, because then rust may begin to appear at the ends. But reinforcement can be welded to the floor beams. The advantage of I-beams is the ability to fill “layer by layer” - one row at a time. This is especially important when pouring it yourself, since it’s definitely not possible to do the entire roof at once.
  3. The formwork is fixed. To make it easier to tear it off from the concrete, the inner walls must be coated with used machine oil or any other cheap oil. The boards should fit as tightly as possible! Concrete “milk” coming through the cracks significantly worsens the quality of the monolithic floor.
  4. The reinforced mesh is poured with concrete mixture, be sure to be bayoneted and smoothed according to the rule. If possible, order ready-made concrete mixture To fill the entire roof at once, you must have at least two assistants to level the mixture with shovels. It’s better to use a deep vibrator when pouring like this, which will help quickly remove air from the mixture.
  5. The concrete screed is covered with plastic film and must be watered regularly. Without watering, concrete will not gain the necessary strength.
  6. After the screed has set, all cracks must be closed. This is done by ironing - a thin layer of cement is scattered on the surface and rubbed in with a regular paint brush. The procedure continues until all cracks are sealed.
  7. All joints in the screed are coated with mastic reinforced with serpyanka. The same applies to the exit point of the ventilation pipe and the upper ribs of the channels.
  8. To ensure the required level of water resistance, a built-up waterproofing layer is laid over the concrete. Be sure to cover the ends of the concrete floor! To do this, the concrete is coated with a primer, and the waterproofing itself is spread in two layers - for reliability. To ensure that the waterproofing does not lag behind, the edges can be pressed with aluminum strips. The dowels are filled with bitumen, and the planks themselves are coated with the same sickle-reinforced mastic.

Concrete roof restoration

But what to do if you inherited a garage? And along with the building, accompanying problems passed to the new owner in the form current roof and crumbling concrete floors? In this case, restoring the roof will not be much simpler than pouring a new one:

You can also restore a leaking roof by making a ceiling of corrugated board or slate on top. To do this, without removing the old roof covering, logs are laid and secured with anchors. Joints around the perimeter are sealed polyurethane foam– for sealing and to prevent the entire ceiling from being lifted by the wind.

The sheathing is fixed to the joists. If the metal is thin, then it is advisable to do the lathing frequently. The edges are protected with metal corners that prevent moisture from leaking from below. After the roofing has been laid, a wind strip must be installed.

It is also called end - it protects the ends of the roof from water entering from above.

A very accessible description of the restoration of a garage roof using corrugated sheets is shown in the video:

DIY wooden garage roof

If concrete work seems complex and time-consuming, the garage roof can be made of wood. More precisely, the rafter system will be wooden, but the roofing itself can be anything from metal to ceramic.

Shed garage roof

This is the simplest option that does not require serious calculations and special construction skills. The only thing you have to take into account with a detached garage is the prevailing wind direction. The lower edge of a pitched roof should be on the windward side - that is, on the side from which the wind most often blows. Otherwise, strong gusts can simply tear off the roof.

Such a roof is extremely simple to erect:

  1. A support board is attached to the wall of the house above the level of the garage wall. With a purlin width of up to 4.5 meters, the rafters will be placed only on the support board and the garage wall. If the width of the garage is planned to be up to 6 m, you will also have to attach a support at the same level with the wall of the garage, on which the rafter leg will rest, providing support for the long rafter.
  2. If the walls of the garage are brick or concrete, a mauerlat made of 15x10 cm or 15x15 cm timber is attached along the upper edge. It provides the necessary strength to the entire roof structure, redistributing the load on the wall. To prevent the wood from rotting, the timber must be treated with an antiseptic and several layers of waterproofing placed under it.
  3. The rafters are attached to the mauerlat either with an outlet beyond the wall or without an outlet. You can calculate the length of the rafters and the angle of inclination using the table.
  4. The waterproofing is laid directly on the rafters. It is fixed on top with counter-lattice bars, on which the lathing is then placed. The waterproofing is laid with an overlap; the overlaps are taped with butyl rubber tape. You can also place tape under the counter-lattice as a seal to seal the puncture sites.
  5. Depending on the chosen roofing covering and the angle of inclination, the sheathing can be either continuous or sparse. This should be taken into account, otherwise the roof may simply fail under critical loads.

Gable roof garage

This option for a DIY device is much more complicated and requires serious calculations. Yes, and more material will also be required. For example, insufficient thickness of rafters can lead to sagging of the roof, resulting in stagnation of snow and bursting rafters due to weight. And even with the required thickness, a large number of knots in the timber can lead to the same results. But such a garage looks presentable, and the space under the roof can be used for storing household equipment.

Device principle gable roof:

  1. It is important to decide on the height of the roof - if the roof is too high, the wind will try to topple it, and if it is too low, it can lift it up.
  2. The rafter system is assembled - triangles consisting of rafter legs and tie rods. For garages more than 6 meters wide, more a complex system using crossbars or headstocks.
  3. You can either collect individual elements on the ground, lifting them as needed, or immediately on the walls. The first option is more suitable for garages, since the ceiling does not spread and in this case it is extremely inconvenient to walk along the edges of the walls.
  4. First, the outer rafters are installed at the ends of the garage. A cord is stretched between them at the highest point, which determines the level of the roof. After this, you can attach all the other rafter legs. They are fixed with temporary jibs.
  5. The ridge girder is attached last. To prevent the rafters from moving, they are secured using the cutting method. Also, to simplify the work, the ridge beam can be fixed with construction angles without cutting out the corners.
  6. The waterproofing is rolled out and fixed with a batten along the rafters. If you use waterproofing membrane, it can act as a temporary roof for two to three months - depending on the manufacturer. You need to pay attention to ultraviolet resistance, otherwise the waterproofing can quickly become unusable, simply starting to crumble.
  7. The sheathing is being filled. The frequency depends on the roof covering. It is better to do it more often than to repair the roof urgently if the roof cannot withstand the pressure of snow.

Regardless of the chosen roofing covering, special attention should be paid to the ridge unit. A poorly made ridge is a guarantee of a leaking roof and the formation of condensation, since the ridge serves as ventilation for the roofing pie.

For example, for a metal tile roof, the distance between the sheathing in the ridge assembly should be no less than 3 cm and no more than 5 cm. And the waterproofing should be located on the roof slopes at a distance of 20 cm. The ridge itself is laid on a breathable insulation and fastened with self-tapping screws.

For a ventilated roof ridge with a soft roof, it can be used as ready-made solutions in the form of a ridge aerator, or make the structure yourself. The first method is much simpler, but significantly increases the cost of construction.

The second option will require a little more effort, but will save you money. The construction of a ventilated ridge with your own hands begins with cutting a ventilation gap in the continuous sheathing. Next, 5x5 cm bars are attached above the ventilated hole, on which the OSB sheets are laid. To protect roofing pie from dust and insects, you can also attach a metal mesh that is wrapped on the bars.

conclusions

To summarize, we can draw the following conclusions when building a garage roof with your own hands:

  • it is better to restore a concrete garage roof using corrugated sheeting - it is easier and cheaper;
  • concrete work must be carried out with an assistant, otherwise the roof will have to be poured in parts and the joints sealed;
  • roof insulation is a must for protection against condensation;
  • for a concrete roof, a built-up waterproofing over the concrete floor is used, for a wooden roof, a windproof membrane is used to prevent the formation of condensation;
  • the thickness of the rafters should be sufficient to withstand the maximum snow load; if the roof slope is small, it is better to do it with a margin of safety;
  • if you choose corrugated sheeting as the cheapest option, you should pay close attention to the quality of the decorative coating - unscrupulous manufacturers may peel it off within a year;

Many people say that they will need to call specialists to install a garage roof. Yes, this is a critical stage of work that requires some skills and basic knowledge. But, if you know how to hold a hammer in your hands and consider yourself capable of doing this work, then building a garage roof with your own hands is a very realistic goal. You only need to study the intricacies of the work and installation instructions.

If you have all the tools and materials, the job will go quickly and you will be able to cover your garage well. And we will help you with that. This article will introduce you to the technology of installing a gable roof on a garage.

What are the advantages of a gable roof

To begin with, I would like to note that a garage is not a house. Not required here complex shapes, elegant design, etc. This is a purely functional building. And the simpler it is to make, the better. The simplest option is a pitched roof. But we will consider a gable roof. This simple design, which consists of two inclined planes. The planes are called roof slopes. The slopes rest on the building box and converge at one point at the top. It's called a skate. If you look at it from a distance, the gable roof resembles an isosceles triangle. Why did we decide to cover our garage in this particular way? There are several reasons for this:

By installing a gable roof on your garage, you get a lot of benefits. It's profitable and easy.

Note! Such a building will look like a separate structure, which cannot be said about lean-to structures. It can be placed not only near the house, but also in another convenient place on the site. According to many professionals, the recommended roof slope is 20-30˚. And you can choose a roofing material identical to what you have on your house. So, everything will look harmonious.

Creating a roof project for a garage

Before making a gable roof, you need to think through everything in advance. What does this include? It is important to know the following parameters:

  • ridge height;
  • quantity of consumables;
  • type of roofing;
  • slope of the roof slopes.

In addition, after constructing the roof, you need to think about making a drain yourself. It will effectively handle rainwater, diverting it away from the building. Otherwise, your efforts may come to nothing in a few years.

When performing structural calculations, the loads that will be exerted on the frame elements are taken into account. You need to calculate the weight of the roof to understand how deep the foundation should be. For creating working diagram, perform the following calculations correctly:

Roof frame made from rafters

The basis of any gable roof is the rafter structure. This is a complex of elements that ensure the stability, strength and stability of the roof. The frame is made of wooden rafters. It is better if it is coniferous wood. And in order to extend their service life, before work they are coated with an antiseptic and fire-resistant compound.

Depending on the layout of the building, weight and area, there are two types of rafter systems:

Do-it-yourself gable roof for a garage

Now comes the most difficult stage of work. All this needs to be put into practice. It will be good if you make a schematic drawing in advance, which will indicate all the dimensions of each of the frame elements, the required distance, and the method of fixation. After this you can start working.

The execution process is as follows:

Note! In the gables you can make windows for natural light and ventilation, as well as doors through which you will enter the attic. Your garage roof is now ready. After reading this information, everything may seem complicated to you. But this is only at first glance. Once you start the process, things will work out. And to make your task easier, we suggest you additionally watch a video on how to make a roof for a garage.

Choosing roofing material for a garage

Many people often wonder how to cover the roof of a garage, because there are many materials for this purpose. Based on the climate in your region, your financial capabilities and the durability of the material. Rolled products are not entirely suitable, since their service life is short. They are most often used for these purposes.

One of the important stages of garage construction, the construction of the roof, often raises a lot of questions. What to choose: attic or flat roof, red corrugated sheeting or cheap slate, make a “warm” floor or insulate the slopes themselves? And below you will learn how to make a garage roof with your own hands, using examples of gable and shed roof options.

First of all, you must find out what kind of garage you actually need: a heated box or a cold box that can only hide the car from snow and rain?

Now decide on the type of roof itself:

  • flat - it involves pouring a concrete floor or installing its factory slabs (usually round-hollow), using a crane to lay them;
  • lean-to - the easiest option for those who plan to make a roof for the garage with their own hands;
  • gable roof is a more complex and labor-intensive roof option that requires certain construction skills and high consumption of materials.

Alternatively, consider a unit above the second floor garage. Depending on the roof used, it is worth deciding on the option for its insulation:

  • flat is insulated along the top of the slab;
  • single-pitch is usually insulated by laying thermal insulation material between the rafters;
  • a gable roof is insulated either like a single-pitched roof, or by placing the insulation above the garage in a horizontal ceiling.

Select the appropriate roofing material for your roof type.

All these actions should be performed at the design stage, since its weight and the load that the roof will exert on the foundation depend on the chosen structure (this will affect the size of the foundation structure and its type: columnar, strip or base slab along the entire perimeter of the garage).

DIY flat roof for garage

It is recommended that such roofing be carried out with the assistance of specialists. This is because you cannot lay finished floor slabs without a team of crane operators. In addition, when pouring a concrete floor manually, you will need a large volume of ready-made concrete (which allows you to do this procedure in one go), reinforcement cages, formwork and assistants.

When pouring a monolithic concrete slab in a garage, it is usually made horizontal, and the slope is created later by laying insulation (for example, expanded clay).

If circular hollow-core floor slabs are installed, then a slope can be created during installation (by making the facade wall higher than the others: height differences should form a slope of at least 2 cm per 1 m of slab length).

Do-it-yourself pitched roof for a garage

The most affordable and simplest option for beginners planning to make a garage roof with their own hands is a pitched roof. Moreover, wooden or metal tanks can be used as load-bearing structures.

  • The supporting structures (rafters) are laid along the garage (it is important that the facade wall is higher than the rest, which allows for the slope required for the roofing material) and rest on the mauerlat (beam with a cross-section of at least 10x10 cm). It is worth putting under the Mauerlat waterproofing layer(pieces of roofing felt work well).
  • Using a construction stapler, a wind and moisture protective membrane is secured to the top of the rafters.
  • Next, a wooden counter batten is attached along the rafters, onto which the sheathing is fixed (with a certain pitch or continuous, depending on the roofing material).
  • The roofing material is laid in accordance with the technology of this process developed by the manufacturer.
  • Roof insulation. It is carried out depending on the chosen option (in the plane of the ceiling or between the rafters). Insulation with inside should be protected with a layer of vapor barrier.

Do-it-yourself gable roof for a garage

To install a gable roof, you will need a device more complex option load-bearing structure. Moreover, if the roofing material needs a significant slope (a large amount of snow is retained on the roof or rainwater can get under it under a strong wind), then it is better to make not an attic, but an attic (there will be a used room inside it).

How to repair a soft roof?

To complete the entire complex repair work soft roof structure will need the following set of tools:

  • roofing felt;
  • broom;
  • tin bucket;
  • bitumen mastic;
  • burner and gas cylinder;
  • construction hair dryer;
  • axe.

Before starting repairs, it is recommended to take into account the nature of the roof. In many cases, garages are built in one row. However, if you decide to make a complete renovation, then you need to contact your neighbors and warn them about it. Otherwise, it’s unlikely that anyone will be happy that part of their roof was destroyed.

Attention! Hard roof repairs should only be done in warm, dry weather.

Identifying problem areas

Remove all leaves and other contaminants from the roof surface. After this, carefully inspect the roof again and decide what kind of repair it should be - partial or complete. If the roof is more than 10 years old, then most likely bulges, cracks have formed on it, and the seams have come apart. Having identified a problem area, do not rush to remove everything. It is enough to cut it crosswise and press tightly. If there are cracks, cut them with an ax and then clean them of debris and dust. To do this, use gas burner and a hairdryer.

Covering the garage roof with roofing felt

One of the most simple ways repair the roof - cover it with roofing felt. The main advantage of this material is its low cost. In addition, it is an excellent waterproofing material that protects the garage roof from leaks.

Previously made holes can be covered with roofing felt. For partial repairs, it should be cut into small pieces. Apply this piece to the hole and press firmly. A layer of resin or mastic is applied on top of it. After this, the bent roofing material can be pressed again and covered with mastic.

Attention! The cut piece of roofing felt must be 20 cm larger than the damaged area. Thus, you will ensure high-quality waterproofing. Then you can simply leave everything as is and lay a new layer of roofing felt over the entire surface of the roof.

How to lay roofing felt on a garage roof

If you plan to cover the roof with a new layer of roofing material, then you should spread it on the surface and wait a day. To complete the work you will need resin (to connect the old roofing felt with the new one). It will also protect all joints from possible leaks. Typically, the resin is prepared in a tin bucket or some other container that is subject to further disposal. To do this, the tar is melted with a burner to the consistency of thick sour cream.

Once the resin is ready, you can fill part of the roof with it, and then lay down the roofing material. Then go over its entire surface. The next sheet should be overlapped towards the slope by 12 cm. For this reason, laying the first sheet should start from the bottom point.

Attention! If bubbles form while laying roofing felt, poke a hole (small) and press firmly on the problem area. If necessary, this place must be filled with resin.

It will take 12 hours for the first layer of roofing material to dry. Then you can install the second layer. Do not forget to ensure that the joints of the first and second layers do not coincide in any way. This will eliminate the possibility of moisture penetrating into the soft roof.

If there are places adjacent to the wall, then it is important to pay special attention to them. Perhaps it would be relevant to use a rigid sheet. Most likely you will need to lay several layers of roofing material in the corner. Moreover, each layer must dry well.

Attention! If the roof slope angle is less than 15°, then less than four layers of roofing material will be needed. If the slope of the slope is more than 16°, then you need to use at least two layers.

Features of garage roof waterproofing

There is another way to make waterproofing. To do this, it is not at all necessary to use roofing felt. You can use a special welding material like bikrost. It is ideal for soft roofing.

The technology for its application is as follows:
  • cleaning and priming of the roof;
  • Rolling out the bicrost roll if necessary. You should not immediately roll out the roll along the entire roof;
  • Please note that the bottom layer of bicrost is represented by oxidized bitumen, which can be heated with a burner;
  • during heating, carefully ensure that the material fits as tightly as possible to the roof at the edges and corners;
  • each subsequent sheet of material must be overlapped by up to 70 mm;
  • There is no need to delay the work process. Everything needs to be done efficiently and quickly. This is primarily due to the fact that bitumen sets very quickly. Tearing it off the roof can cause damage.

As you can see, the technology for waterproofing a bicrost roof is almost no different from that used when laying roofing felt. The only advantage is that you don't have to prepare the resin. Believe me, this is a painstaking and unpleasant process. But the result will not be worse.

How to repair a hard roof

If corrugated sheeting, rather than resin, is used to cover the garage, then the nature of its repair will naturally be different. Most likely, it is easier to replace damaged sheets. Although there are cases when a tree has fallen on the roof of the garage, as a result of which it is necessary to resort to major renovation, which also implies the installation of sheathing.

If partial repairs are required, then, first of all, you need to dismantle the old sheet and lay a new one. It is important that it does not coincide in wavelength. In addition, it is important to carefully ensure that the correct overlap is made. The sheet is screwed with special self-tapping screws designed for corrugated sheets.

Attention! If the length of the garage is 6 meters, and the sheet of material is 1 meter, then 12 sheets of corrugated sheeting will be needed for the entire roof.

If the garage is covered with metal tiles, then its repair is practically no different. The only thing that needs to be controlled are the locks connecting the tiles.

By following our recommendations, you will be able to make high-quality roof repairs, which will significantly reduce costs than having to create it all over again. And do not forget that often the roof requires partial repair, which will save your money. But the main thing is that you can do all the work yourself.

Garage roof structures come in several types. In order to choose the best one, you need to familiarize yourself with the specific features of each of them. So, different variants mounted differently.

Peculiarities

A roof for a garage is different in many ways from a roof for a house. This is due not only to the fact that the garage is used as an additional utility structure, but also to the fact that there is no need for such high-quality thermal insulation. That's why the roofs are covered inexpensive materials, which do not cause difficulties during their installation.

A specific feature of the garage roof is that its shape and design are selected relative to the location of the garage house. Moreover, it is determined stylistic coloring facade of the main house, as well as the surrounding landscape. However, it must be remembered that there should not be any special frills here, because the garage is still not the main structure, and in theory it should not attract too much attention to itself.

Due to the simplicity of the design, garage roofs will not cost much. This is due to the low cost of materials and repair work. Due to the ease of installation, construction work will cost little. Thanks to this same feature, installation can be done independently, without the involvement of specialists.

Such high-quality insulation is not required, so this side detail can be easily dispensed with.

Kinds

This is not to say that garage roofing comes in a wide variety of types. Simplicity and functionality are the fundamental principles in accordance with which the choice is made in favor of one design or another. This is the reason for such a meager choice.

The choice in favor of one type or another is made based on several factors. Firstly, it is important climate zone, in which a garage is being built. How windy the area is and how much rainfall there is directly affects the choice of design and roof slope. Secondly, again, overall harmony is important. It is much better if the garage roof is similar to the one on the house. Thirdly, the chosen material plays a role. Some types look good only on roofs with one slope, others - with two.

Before choosing one type or another, it is necessary to analyze the situation with the construction of a garage. First of all, you need to know:

  • the climate in which the garage building will be located;
  • whether the garage will be adjacent to the house or separate;
  • what material is the roof made of?
  • height of the roof above ground level.

By answering each of the questions posed, you will be able to choose the best option that is suitable for your particular case.

Each type of roof has its own subtypes, which are also worth keeping in mind. The use of one or another subtype is determined depending on the area of the roofing. Thus, it is possible to prevent the roof from collapsing, its subsidence under the weight of precipitation, and the load on the foundation is also regulated.

Flat

A roof with a slope height of up to 3 degrees is classified as flat. Compared to pitched roofs, it has a number of advantages:

  • a flat roof takes up much less space than a pitched roof, resulting in savings on materials for its manufacture;
  • a flat roof can be built much faster than a pitched roof, since complex calculations regarding the rafter system are not required;
  • repairing a flat structure is much easier and safer due to the fact that the risk of falling by sliding down a surface with a steep slope is reduced;
  • if the garage is attached to the house, then such a roof can be converted into a balcony or used as a terrace on the second floor.

Nevertheless flat roofs not suitable for areas with strong winds And big amount precipitation, since they may not withstand and collapse under the weight of snow. This also explains the fact that such a roof will have to be periodically cleared of snow and icy crust.

To drain water from such roofs, it is often necessary to organize additional drainage channels. The tightness of the roof is under threat: this must be constantly monitored, carrying out preventive maintenance every year.

Low slope

Low-slope pitched roofs are considered universal solution. They are suitable for areas with an average climate. The garage may not be located in the city, but it should not be located in a windy steppe space. The slope angle of low-slope structures varies from 3 to 30 degrees. The advantages of such roofs are some features that will be discussed below. A special feature is that the slope for each specific case is determined through calculations, and the minimum acceptable value is selected. Calculations are made based on the roofing material.

When building low-slope roofs, several specific features will need to be taken into account:

  • Equipment Needs drainage system internal or external type.
  • The roof must have good tightness.
  • The need for a ventilation gap under the roof. Its size is determined according to the angle of inclination: the flatter the roof, the larger the gap.

Thus, choosing a low-slope roof guarantees savings on materials, but you will have to spend a lot more effort and money on the structure itself. Make sure that the choice of a low slope is justified in terms of aesthetic appeal.

Steeply inclined

The angle of inclination of steeply pitched roofs starts at 30 degrees. As with other options, this variety has both pros and cons. It is necessary to use roofs with a steep slope if the garage is located on windless areas (for example, in urban areas). If there is a lot of snow in the area, then such a roof will allow you not to waste time on cleaning it, because the snow will not linger on it, rolling down steep surfaces.

This option is completely unacceptable for windy areas. Thus, the roof can easily be blown away by a strong gust of wind. If the area is windless and there is little precipitation, then the costs of such construction will not be justified.

Thus, the choice of one or another variety is primarily determined by the location of the garage and the site as a whole.

For steppe windy deserts, it is best to choose flat or low-slope roofs; for wooded areas, low-slope options are best suited; and for urban areas with large amounts of precipitation, a steeply sloped variety is the best choice.

However, roofs are divided not only by angle of inclination. There is another classification of roofs - by the number of slopes. For garages, only two types are used: single-slope and double-slope.

Single-pitch

Shed roofing is valued for its simplicity and functionality.

  • Firstly, its installation actually takes less time than the construction of a gable version.
  • Secondly, it will not be difficult to make all the calculations for the required amount of material. This step can be taken independently, and the accuracy of the calculations will not be in doubt.
  • Thirdly, such a roof requires significantly less material than a gable structure of the same area.
  • Fourthly, a pitched roof is an excellent option if you need to design a garage attached to the house. She looks the most harmonious.
  • Fifthly, it is believed that pitched roofs more durable than gable ones. In addition, they are more reliable and stronger, and thanks to timely repairs they can last up to 50 years.

Mono-slope structures are not without their disadvantages.

  • Due to the fact that in most cases single-pitched options are flat, the load on them increases in winter period. Snow doesn’t roll off on its own, and you have to either clear it off yourself or trust that the roof will bear it.
  • With the lean-to option, you will definitely have to abandon the attic, even if a small attic space was initially planned.
  • This variety is more difficult to equip with decent thermal insulation.
  • Many people notice that the single-pitch structure looks rustic compared to the expressive gable one, and in some cases this causes certain inconvenience to the owners.

Gable

A gable roof is more often used for detached garages. Seeing it on a structure attached to a house is very rare. Nevertheless, gable options have their advantages.

  • Thanks to its special shape, such a roof does not retain snow and rain. They roll down instead of weighing down the structure.
  • Although a gable roof is more complex than a single-pitch roof, you can make a garage version yourself if you take into account some adjustments.
  • By choosing the basic option, you can save a lot on work, since you will be able to complete it alone, or at most with a partner.
  • The gable design allows it to be equipped with good thermal insulation, thereby reducing heat loss. So, when planning a warm garage, other roofing options cannot be considered.
  • The gable roof allows you to organize a small attic where you can store tools and other equipment. In cases where a mounted gable design, it turns out to increase the ceiling height.

Having assessed exactly what you want your garage to look like in the end, you can easily choose the type of roof structure for it.

Materials

Roofing materials– these are not only those that are on the outside. For internal construction, their own types are also used. If the rafters can be made from wooden beams, then several materials are suitable for waterproofing. Most often, roll insulators are used for this, for example, bikrost, roofing felt, roofing felt. Instead, you can use bitumen mastic, which will reliably protect the roof from water penetration.

But it is also important not to buy too expensive materials for covering the garage roof. For example, a garage roof lined ceramic tiles, will look strange and inappropriate. If the roof of the main house is finished with such an elite material, it would still be better to choose a cheap equivalent for the garage. This will show both the good taste of the owner and his practicality, allowing for significant savings.

For internal wooden structure There is also an analogue - a concrete frame. It should be kept in mind that Concrete is much heavier than wood, the load on the foundation of the building will increase significantly. In this regard, before choosing such an alternative, it is necessary to ensure that the strength of the structure is sufficient.

Corrugated sheet

One of the most common materials used to cover a garage roof is corrugated sheeting. This type is so often used due to a number of advantages, including a large selection of colors, price, and ease of installation. In addition, the corrugated sheet is durable. If you lay it properly, a durable, aesthetically attractive coating will be guaranteed.

Corrugated roofing differs in the height of the corrugation, the width of the sheets themselves and the type of galvanized steel used in production. The material of the NS category belongs to the roofing class, so when choosing, you should definitely look for this particular marking. Please also pay attention to the presence of the GOST mark. If it is not there, this means that during production other standards were taken as a model or there were no standards at all. From this we can conclude that corrugated sheeting without such a symbol is not always of high quality.

For roofing, it is necessary to choose profiled sheets with a polymer coating. Polyvinyl dichloride, pural and polyester are considered suitable. The first is the most durable sample, but its cost is slightly higher, but the other options are cheaper, but less wear-resistant.

Slate

Dull gray slate material has long become a classic of the genre, and when it comes to slate, everyone imagines just such roofs. Despite its unattractive appearance, slate has excellent strength characteristics. If you choose a high-quality sample produced in accordance with modern technologies, it can easily last up to 50 years.

  • Slate is made from different types raw materials. Plastic, asbestos-cement, soft, rubber and metal are used. Each of these subcategories has its own characteristics and advantages.
  • For example, the asbestos-containing option has excellent technical indicators and low cost, but asbestos is toxic, and this type of slate is harmful to health.
  • Soft slate does not have frost resistance, but it is strong, durable and at the same time flexible.
  • Plastic slate lasts up to 15 years without loss of strength, but it must be installed carefully, given that it tends to either shrink or expand depending on temperature changes.

There is a wide variety on the market now decorative solutions, and you can choose slate material of any color.

"Ondulin"

The company name Ondulin has long become a household name, which is used to designate roofing sheets that imitate other materials. There are three types of them that are most popular.

  • Smart. The material has a small mass, as a result of which it is possible to carry out installation alone, without the help of a partner. Thanks to optimal size sheets and their small thickness of only 3 mm, you can completely sheathe the roof of a garage in one day. It will take a lot of nails. And also when working with Smart material, the joints will need to be covered with additional decorative elements.
  • Diy. This variety is more rigid than the previous one. This is due to the fact that the waves here are more frequent and higher. The mass of the material remains the same. Thus, such options are more suitable for roofs of complex architecture, rather than for elementary garage structures. The material is laid overlapping, due to which its consumption increases.
  • "Tile". Finishing with this type of sheet is indistinguishable from finishing with metal tiles, but it is much easier to implement than laying a real tile roof. There is a wide variety of color options, and there are not only plain roofs, but also spotted ones.

fold

Steel roofs raise more questions than all others.

  • Firstly, they are not strong enough. Any severe mechanical damage will easily warp the overly flexible material.
  • Secondly, steel does not hold temperature at all, as a result of which it will be necessary to take additional care of the heat-insulating layer.
  • Thirdly, the waterproofing is also not at the proper level: the roof can easily begin to leak, jeopardizing the safety of your car. The roof will need to be additionally sealed.

However, seam steel floors have several significant advantages. In the first place is the price: it is an order of magnitude lower than the cost of other options. Repairing this roof is also easy, since the panels are fastened to each other using ordinary tucks. The roof can be covered with this material even in winter. Due to its flexibility, steel is ideal for winter installation. So, because of all this, seam roofing coverings confidently remain on the list of the most popular among all materials for the design of side buildings.

Ruberoid

Roofing felt is laid on a continuous sheathing. Its advantage is that it is sold in rolls, and there will be no installation difficulties. However, there are several pitfalls here too.

  • It should be borne in mind that the material consumption will be impressive. Roofing felt is laid in three layers, which are coated with bitumen mastic for better thermal and waterproofing.
  • The service life of the material is 15 years, after which it will need to be dismantled.
  • The material is mainly used for finishing flat roofs. Roofing felt coating cannot be called aesthetically attractive: when pitched roofs are sheathed with it, they are additionally covered on top with some material with better decorative properties.

Ruberoid for roofing is produced in four main categories, which differ according to the type of base.

  • Rubemast gives the coating durability due to the fact that it is more flexible and less susceptible to cracking.
  • Fiberglass ruberoid or steklomast has characteristics similar to rubemast, but it is based on fiberglass rather than construction cardboard.
  • Roofing felt is practically not produced, since it lags far behind in quality, but in terms of production price it is on par with other types.
  • Euroroofing material has a complex structure. This material is the newest of all, and its qualities greatly exceed those of traditional roofing felt coatings.

Polycarbonate

This variety is of greatest interest due to unusual looking. Peculiarity polycarbonate roofs is that they are transparent. Depending on which type of polycarbonate is chosen, the degree of transparency varies. Thus, the surface can be from slightly cloudy to practically impervious to light. Based on their structure, there are monolithic and cellular polycarbonate slabs. The first option is cheaper, but the second does not require additional thermal insulation.

Polycarbonate is resistant to all kinds of influences, both physical and chemical. It is non-flammable, so it can be considered a fireproof material.

However, it is worth keeping in mind that if you plan to make a warm garage, polycarbonate will not work. Due to the installation of additional thermal insulation, all its decorative qualities will be lost, and the result will not please you as much as it could. If you need a warm garage, then it is better to make the roof from a cheaper material.

Slope angle

The installation of a roof involves complex calculations, including raising the roof. Regardless of whether a gable or single-pitch structure is chosen, lifting is mandatory. The only exception is flat roofs, but there is always a slight slope of a couple of degrees.

The height to which the roof needs to be raised is determined by many factors. An important detail is how exactly the slope will be located. note that It is optimal to place the slope on the windward side. It doesn’t matter whether the garage is closed from the wind by other structures or a fence - this rule is immutable.
