DIY chair seat covers. DIY soft covers for stools

Good day, my dear readers))). Today I will share with you an unusual experience, as the master class will be on the topic: how to sew chair covers yourself, in other words, simply decorate them. What is this for, you ask? Indeed, this question will probably arise for many, since not every person will be faced with the need to have beautiful chairs made from ugly ones.

In my case, an old and tattered Soviet chair that had been lying in the attic for many years will be turned into a chic chair that will add a certain charm to any interior.

You can find a huge number of ideas on the Internet, but for my chairs I chose this photo, only I needed to cover the legs of the chair completely.

For one chair I needed:

  • 2 meters of any fabric with a width of 150 cm (it is advisable to take thick fabric - jacquard, suit, etc.)
  • padding polyester 200 - 1 meter

Before you start cutting, of course, you need to take measurements from the chair.

What parts will we measure?

  1. height (b, see in the figure below) and the width(s) of the chair back
  2. width (h) and depth (d) of the chair seat
  3. height of legs (d) from the desired length of the cover to the seat

The case will ultimately consist of three parts:

  • Back (part 1, see picture below) It bends on both sides, the part consists of three parts (two layers of fabric, and in the middle there is a layer of synthetic padding), tied with ties for beauty and fixation.
  • Seat detail (part 2, see picture below) also consists of three parts (two parts made of fabric and padding polyester in the middle).
  • A ruffle is sewn to the seat part around the entire perimeter (part 3, see picture below), this ruffle completely covers the legs of the chair; if desired, it can be made shorter.

You measure your chair, for me almost all sides were approximately 50 cm (plus or minus a few cm, the seat of the chair may also not have square shape, take this into account when measuring), so I purposely do not write my measurements, but conditionally. It just seems to me that all standard model chairs (especially old Soviet ones) have approximately the same dimensions (I’m not currently considering small chairs or stools, or designer ones - I hardly want to sew a cover on them!!))).

Layout of the cover parts on the fabric:

The parts are laid out very conveniently, and there is not even a residue left:

  • 1 - part for the back, cut out so that the grain of the fabric goes from top to bottom, as in the picture, you need 2 of these parts, but I forgot to diagram the second one, so keep in mind that the second part of the back is placed under two parts No. 2 (in the picture) . there is free space), but at the same time it is cut not along the lobar, but sideways, and this part will be internal to the back part.
  • 2 — part for the seat, 2 pcs.
  • 3 - ruffles, my legs are 40 cm high, the ruffle height is 43 cm, taking into account allowances and hems at the bottom. The seat of the chair has a perimeter of 200 cm, so that the ruffle looks beautiful (so that there is a “wave”, like on curtains), you need to take fabric no less than 1.5 times more. I took 300 cm for the ruffles; I will need to lay them in folds around the perimeter of the seat. We sew the ruffle detail into one of two strips to make a length of 300 cm.
  • 3a - this detail is conditional, I just cut off a square, I will sew it separately on the back of the seat.

How to sew a chair cover with your own hands?

After you have created a pattern for the cover, you can begin the sewing process itself.

Cut out the back part from padding polyester:

Cut out the seat part from padding polyester:

From the main fabric we cut out two seat parts:

From the main fabric we cut out two back pieces:

We sew two parts of the seat with padding polyester, first fold them face to face, put padding polyester on the wrong side, then sew them together and turn them inside out. We also sew the remaining side, bending the seam allowances inwards, this seam will be visible on the front side, but will not be noticeable on the cover itself, since it is located near the back and will be covered by the back part.

We do the same with the backrest part of the chair (same principle), sew the synthetic padding inside and turn it inside out, open side we spend.

You will get this beautiful detail:

Cut out two strips for the ruffle:

I cut a square from one of the strips so that I could then sew it onto the back of the seat piece.

We process on this cut square sides and the bottom is double hemmed and sewn to the back side of the seat parts, leaving 4 cm on the sides.

I will also need to cut out the laces to tie the cover on the back and seat parts at the back of the chair.

The lace will be 40 cm long, so we cut out strips 42 cm long and 4 cm wide; the finished lace will be 1 cm wide.

You will need 6 such laces, 2 for the seat and 4 for the back of the chair.

We sew the finished laces on the sides of the seat part from the rear legs of the chair:

Then we sew both ruffle strips into one piece, iron the seam, and process side seams and the bottom of the ruffle is double hemmed and evenly sewn to the seat part, while the ruffle goes to the required length on the lace, so the chair legs will not be visible. I laid one-sided folds on the ruffle.

At the end, process all the cuts on the cover with an overlock or zig-zag stitch so that the fabric does not fray.

We also sew laces onto the back part, stepping back from the edge 10 cm (so we sew a lace on each of the four sides).

This is such a beautiful chair cover:

And there was this scary chair......

So it turned out quite beautiful, considering the original appearance of the furniture))).

Don't be afraid to experiment and come up with new things and sew with me! See you soon on the blog pages, good luck to you!

The house should be beautiful and cozy. Each person has his own understanding of what is beautiful, so we furnish our homes differently, but always “to suit ourselves,” our mood and the tastes of our household members.

A cozy home for me is where you are welcome, where you can relax and gain strength, where it is clean and beautiful. In such a place, even the walls are healed, and harmony lives in the soul.

To get even closer to a corner where you can hide from your hectic life modern world, I propose to make textile covers for chairs.

As always, sewing begins with a pattern, which is what we’ll talk about in today’s master class. I hope you find it interesting.

To sew a chair cover , it is necessary to take several measurements, but first we need to decide what kind of cover we will sew. Covers come in:
- backrest
- seat
- back and seat

There are also different chair covers depending on the occasion. It all depends on the pattern and fabric you will sew from, as well as ribbons and other sewing accessories. Before you start work, you need to make a pattern, think about the reason for wearing the covers (holiday or for every day) and buy the right amount of fabric.

Making a pattern for the covers is quite simple, since most often chairs have straight sides, which can be easily measured and a schematic drawing made.

The easiest way to make a chair cover - This is to prepare two strips of fabric and fasten them with ties. The seams can be sewn, or you can leave them, but fasten them with another pair of ties in the front.

If you do not have the opportunity to sew a cover, then you can simply cut it out made of fabric whose edges do not fray, then the pattern of the cover will look like this.

Although you will still need to sew on the ties, this can be done without using a sewing machine.

The pattern of this chair cover consists of two various details (pattern of the back cover and pattern of the seat cover). We sew a cover on the back, like a bag. The seat cover consists of two parts (seat and skirt) that are connected together. We fold the skirt at the corners. We fasten the cover to the chair with ties.

Chair cover with round seat (and rounded back) not much scarier than the previous pattern (even easier in some ways, because you don’t need to make folds on the skirt).

The schematic pattern of a cover for this type of chair consists of 4 main parts: a round seat, 2 parts of the back (long back and short front) and a skirt. To make the cover beautiful, it is proposed to sew triangular ties to it. If desired, these can be ribbons.

As you can see, making a pattern is not difficult. The main thing is to sew the cover so correctly that it looks beautiful.

Good luck!

Textiles add soulfulness, warmth and style to any interior. Hand-sewn chair covers are a prime example of this. Made by the hands of the mistress of the house, they speak of her homeliness, creative spirit, love for her home and your loved ones, about the desire to make their life cozy and stylish.

Kinds

Furniture covers may vary in material quality, product shape, size and color scheme.

Not every material is suitable for an everyday case. The fabric for the future product should be of good quality, wear-resistant, pleasant to the touch, and most importantly, pleasing to the eye. This is especially true for covers on dining chairs with backrests. Textiles in the kitchen area tend to get dirty quickly, so fabric products will need to be washed frequently.

For everyday covers, you should not use allergenic fabrics such as wool and viscose.

If there is at least one person in the house who is prone to allergies, you need to make sure that no objects create discomfort for him. Another disadvantage of wool is its warming ability, which is not required for covers, especially in the spring and summer.

Among the options for the most current fabric for sewing covers, the following can be noted:

Cotton. Inexpensive and hypoallergenic cotton fabrics are durable and wash well. The disadvantages include instant wetness. The colors on these materials quickly fade in the sun.

Linen fabrics extremely durable, suitable for many years of use without loss of quality. Linen products will always be relevant for kitchen interiors different styles, especially for rustic country and gentle Provence. The slightly rough texture is difficult to paint and is difficult to wash and iron.

Crepe satin and gabardine– the most successful materials for chair covers. Elegant variations of fabrics that provide an elegant appearance to future products, have good elasticity and density, and are easy to wash and clean.

Supplex/Lycra– elastic fabrics that stretch perfectly in all directions. Based on their combination of qualities, they are suitable for any furniture covers: durable, waterproof, and easy to clean.

Dimensions

In order to correctly cut out a future furniture cover, in any case you will need the dimensions of a chair or stool. This is especially true for fabric products that completely fit the furniture. Knowing the exact measurements, you can sew a textile accessory of any possible configuration. A simple tailor's "centimeter" is suitable for taking measurements.

You can draw a smaller version of the product on a piece of paper and mark the size after each measurement to avoid confusion.

For a chair with a rectangular back you will need the following dimensions:

    back height;

    seat depth;

    chair width;

    height of legs;

the height of the chair itself from the top edge of the back to the floor.

Color

In order for harmony to reign in the interior, the color scheme of the chair covers must necessarily echo the shade of the curtains and tablecloths in the kitchen. Tender ones preferred pastel shades. A universal option is white or beige material, but in a kitchen or dining room it will be too soiled and will have to be washed often. The style of the room is also important. The cover for a chair or stool can be dark brown or black, if this is relevant in this context.

Material consumption

To sew a standard universal chair cover you will need some fabric. For one product, 1.5-2 meters is enough. A half-case requires even less. If you need a regular cushion for a stool, calculate the dimensions of the seat and double the amount of material. For fastening ties, the amount of fabric does not need to be taken into account; they are usually ribbons.

Types

To determine the variation of a product, you need to consider each of its types.

Universal covers resemble a cape in appearance, the width of which is adjustable. The fixing laces are located at the back of the chair. The products do not have armrests, so they are suitable for different styles of chairs. Brooches, satin ribbons, rhinestones, and lurex thread can be used as additional decoration. Some craftsmen use lightning. Most often they are located on the side for secure fixation.

There are also universal models for stools. Moreover, their length can vary; in this case, the “skirt” does not cover the entire length of the chair, but only a separate part of it. Such models of covers are called shortened - they usually cover 2/3 of the stool.

Luxury products stand out from their “colleagues”. For such specimens, only expensive materials are used, which are distinguished by spectacular folds and all kinds of decorations. Fresh flowers, rich drapery, rhinestone threads, and crystals are used as decorative elements. Another one distinguishing feature– ruffles along the edge of the seat, which give the product a graceful look. Models are used primarily in expensive restaurants for weddings, banquets and other special occasions.

Semi-covers - another variety kitchen accessories. Products are most often sewn with an elastic band that covers the chair, or with ribbons that are tied to it. Such methods of fixation prevent the cover from slipping.

The cover can be sewn only on the seat or cover only the back of the chair. Or the product (one-piece or separate) can completely cover both the seat and the back.

How to take measurements and make a pattern?

The initial stage of sewing a cover is creating a pattern. It completely depends on the design of the furniture product.

It is necessary to take a material that takes shape well and cover the chair with it, securing it with pins in the right places. At this stage, you need to decide what the cover will be like, how long the legs will be covered, and whether a fastener is needed at the back.

Measurements for the cover can be taken using tracing paper. Let's give an example for a simple product with a back and a fold at the back.

A layer of paper is applied to the seat, secured with tailor's needles and traced along the contour. Add a 1.5 cm allowance on all sides and cut out the part. Measure the back of the chair in the same way.

For the front “skirt” of the cover, measure the length of the chair legs and the width of the front edge. Draw a rectangle on a sheet of tracing paper and add 5 cm to the bottom of the pattern and 10 cm to the sides, plus 1.5 cm seam allowance along the top edge.

The pattern for the sides of the “skirt” is made in the same way. Add 15 cm to the edge adjacent to the outer back piece. The pattern is made in duplicate.

To measure the outer part of the backrest, apply long sheet tracing paper to the top edge of the back of the chair, mark the outer edges. Lines are drawn along the back legs of the chair to the floor, adding 5 cm at the bottom and 1.5 cm for the seam allowance. The centers are marked at the bottom and top of the pattern, then folded along them and the fabric is cut into two even parts.

How simpler product, the fewer measurements are needed. For a simple seat, you only need to measure the depth and width of the seat.

Design

One of the most common ways to diversify the interior is to use unusual textile elements. The design of textile products directly depends on their purpose in the interior and the theme of the space.

Interesting ideas for decorating a high chair cover will help decorate a child's room. The back of the chair with the image of a funny animal or favorite cartoon character will please any child. Create a similar design on high chair possible using the application.

To create a festive atmosphere in the house, you can decorate furniture covers in a festive manner. IN summer time Decorative elements can include fresh flowers and compositions made from them. For a wedding or birthday celebration, you can choose transparent flowing fabrics decorated with lurex and rhinestones. For a winter celebration, you can afford New Year's paraphernalia: a cover scarlet color with a cap like Santa Claus, decorative elements in the form of gilded cones and fir branches.

The cover can not only be sewn, but also knitted or crocheted. This product looks very cozy and homey.

Seat

The seat cover is the most popular textile product for the kitchen. This type of cover can be used as a bar stool, and on a simple stool. Its production does not require large material costs, and even a teenager can cope with it.

There are several options for making a seat with your own hands:

The easiest way is to sew an accessory from two halves of fabric. A pattern is made from cardboard or tracing paper based on the shape of the chair seat. Transfer the pattern to the fabric and padding polyester, sew it together and apply decorative stitching in a diamond pattern. The edges of the product can be trimmed with trim.

  • For those who know how to knit, it will not be difficult to make a unique hand-made product for the kitchen. It is better to choose bright, large yarn as a material. Specimens knitted from small volumetric parts - cones from several columns - look attractive.
  • Another interesting way– a seat made using the “biscuit” technique, which consists of many soft small pillows sewn together into one fabric.

Functionality

Like any thing, covers have their purpose.

Thanks to them, you can solve several problems simultaneously:

Fabric products provide good protection new furniture from dirt and mechanical damage, and the soft upholstery of chairs from scuffs. The ability to wash the removable cover when dirty is one of the advantages of a woven product. In addition, the covers protect furniture and upholstery from the sharp claws of pets.

Perform an aesthetic function. Cases can radically transform old furniture, breathe into it new life. Sewing a cover yourself or purchasing a ready-made one is much easier than buying new furniture or completely reupholstering chairs.

Unpresentable plastic chairs at the dacha you can decorate it with spectacular drapery made of suitable material.

On special occasions, covers are worn to decorate the interior; they help create a special holiday atmosphere.

Style

Chair covers can suit any interior style. For example, simple cotton fabrics with fine floral pattern appropriate for French Provence.

Striped mother-of-pearl materials will suit a classic English room. Denim denim can become great solution modern interior. Rough, undyed linen is relevant for a rustic style.

Will look great in rustic country style knitted covers on the chairs. You can use homemade rugs, which are now very fashionable, from strips of old knitwear. Strict satin products are appropriate for any classic interior.

Sewing universal products

The production of universal models does not involve a complex pattern; taking measurements and creating a template on paper is carried out according to a standard scheme.

Let's look at sewing a cover using the example of a product with a back and a fold at the back step by step:

  1. The pattern is transferred to the fabric, always taking into account the position of the grain thread. You can draw on fabric using chalk, a thin piece of soap or a pencil.
  2. After cutting, they proceed to sewing the product. First, sew down the side seams of the back.
  3. Next, we fold and sew the bottom and side sections of the back of the back.
  4. At this point, you can sew the zipper into the fold at the back of the garment. After this, we grind down the upper edge of the back of the chair.
  5. We sew together all the parts of the “skirt”. We turn its bottom edge and stitch it.
  6. We sew down the seat of the cover and the upper edge of the “skirt”.
  7. We connect the back and other parts together.
  8. At the final stage, you need to overcast the internal seams and cuts. If this is not possible, you can do it manually with an overcast stitch.
  9. If the zipper was not sewn in, you need to sew decorative loops and buttons into the fold at the back of the product.

For kitchen

The kitchen is one of the most favorite rooms in the house, where the whole family gathers every day for intimate conversations and delicious food.

Sometimes the owners get very tired of old chairs, and they want to update something in them. For this purpose, you can create a textile version of the covers.

With the help of covers it is easy to change the appearance of chairs and the entire accompanying interior. New paints of various colors will be added to it.

Chair covers will help make your kitchen feel cozy, chic and unique. Due to the richness of designs for the covers, they can also be used for the dining room, children's room, guest room, and hallway.

This design option for chairs can be successfully used to create a high-quality interior in a restaurant or cafe.

It makes it easier to organize a themed banquet or party. Because the covers give the chairs the necessary touch of solemnity and style.

But the decorative purpose of their use is not the only one, since covers can play a role in protecting the chair from various contaminants and subsequent rapid wear and tear.

Sometimes unexpected things happen that leave marks on chairs. Children are often not known for their neatness, and pets even more so.

The covers are very beneficial because they can be easily removed for cleaning or washing. If one of them completely deteriorates, a new one can be prepared to replace it.

What is the difference between covers and various covers for chairs?

They differ in purpose, texture and shape. There are quite strict options, beautiful, very simple or very unusual. For any chair you can choose a cover that suits it.

For example, the same children's chair used for feeding a baby can be decorated with a cover based on a bright print or pleasant embroidery.

A chair created on a wooden base can be decorated with a cape that matches the color. Even a fishing chair can be decorated in an unusual way.

Although designers believe that the easiest way to decorate is with a high back version. Covers can be casual or festive.

Purpose of application

Everyday versions are created for daily use. They will need to be washed frequently, which is why it is best to sew with thicker versions of the fabric.

They must have perfect functionality so that they are easy to put on or take off.

Holiday options will be rarely used, since they are needed only for special occasions. They can be issued big amount decoration elements.

In this case, you can allow a creative approach to creating such a case with your own hands.

According to their shape, the covers are divided into groups

The designers decided to distinguish three groups of cases based on their shape. The one-piece version can cover the entire chair, even including the legs. This version is considered the most universal, since its functionality allows it to be used for different purposes.

With this option, you can provide an infusion into any interior and hide the imperfections of the chair.

However, they are quite difficult to sew, which is considered the main disadvantage of this choice. In addition, they will require much more fabric compared to other versions of the cover forms.

Covers to cover the backrest and seating area are usually suitable for domestic use. Separate covers for the back and seat can be provided.

Typically, the seat is more susceptible to various troubles than the backrest. Because of this, the seat cover will have to be washed more often than the back version.

This version is suitable for providing an informal atmosphere in the area summer kitchen or a garden version of a gazebo. And it is also very good for a children's room.

Chair back covers. In principle, they belong indirectly to the category of covers, since for the most part they are used during various celebrations.

They are fairly easy to create and don't require too much fabric. With their help, you can ensure high-quality celebration of the New Year or birthday, or any children's parties.

Which option to choose

You can buy covers, however, it is much more interesting to create them yourself. To sew one cover you will have to spend about 1-2 meters of fabric.

If you don’t have sewing skills, then you can turn to professionals who are ready to create a unique version of the case. They will be happy to create the required product after listening to the customer’s wishes.
