  • Our first symbol is “Pu”. They mean that we have an installation wire in front of us. Previously, wires were divided into installation and installation.   • The last symbol that can be in the abbreviation is the fire safety indicator of the wire. Moreover, if this abbreviation is not present, it means that the cable does not propagate combustion when laid alone. If the symbol “ng” appears, it means the wire does not spread flame when laid in groups.

In addition, for wires with the designation “ng”, GOST assumes the possibility of having some more symbols. So “LSLTx” speaks of reduced dust and gas emissions during combustion.

The “HF” symbol indicates that the cable does not emit corrosive gases when burned. Well, the “HFLTx” symbol demonstrates that the wire, when burned, emits little dust, gas and corrosive substances.

Numbers are usually indicated after the abbreviation. Usually this is one number from 0.5 to 240. It indicates the cross-section of the current-carrying part of the wire. And only in rare cases can you find the symbols “1x1” or the like, in which the first digit indicates the number of cores, and the second the cross-section of the current-carrying part of the wire.

PuGV wire design

Now we can talk about the design of the wire itself. As we have already mentioned above, PuGV wires are single-core and due to this their design is quite simple.

So:

  • First of all, it is a conductor, which consists of several copper wires. Individual wires of smaller cross-sections twisted together make it possible to ensure proper flexibility of the wire even with a large total cross-section.
  • The number of these individual wires depends on the cross-section of the cable. So for wires with a cross-section from 0.5 mm 2 to 35 mm 2 the minimum number of wires is 7 pieces. But usually for larger diameters there are more of them and their number is determined by the technical regulations of each individual manufacturer.
  • For wires with a cross-section from 50 mm 2 to 95 mm 2, the instructions provide for the use of at least 19 wires. And for larger cross-section wires there are 37 wires.
  • But this is the minimum value. The actual value can be found out based on the cross-section of each individual wire. After all, it is quite logical here that the smaller the cross-section of each individual wire, the greater their number will be required in order to obtain the required nominal cross-section of the wire.
  • And here standards come to our aid again. So for a wire with a cross-section of 0.5 mm2, the cross-section of each individual wire should be no more than 0.21 mm2. For a wire with a cross-section of 10 mm 2 this value should already be no more than 0.41 mm 2, and for a wire with a cross-section of 240 mm 2 it will be equal to 0.51 mm 2.

  • In addition to the conductor itself, each wire must have insulation. And here it is also quite logical that the larger the cross-section of the wire, the thicker its insulation should be.
  • And here standards come to our aid again. They standardize the nominal insulation thickness, its minimum value and the maximum outer size of the wire. You can see these values ​​in more detail in the photo below.

Well, the last aspect regarding the design of the wire includes its coloring. At all this parameter is not standardized and the wire can be solidly painted in any color. Only for tropical wires it is not recommended to use natural colors. In other cases, this aspect is discussed with the customer.

Note! If the PuGV wires are intended for use as a grounding conductor as in the video, then they should be yellow-green in color. In this case, any 15 cm of wire should account for no more than 70% of one color and no less than 30 cm of another.

Electrical and mechanical characteristics of PuGV wires

The main condition influencing the choice of wires is its characteristics. They are divided into electrical and mechanical.

Electrical characteristics of the wire

Since the main purpose of the wire is to pass electric current, then of course we’ll start with the electrical parameters.

And here the efficiency and reliability of PuGV is important for us:

  • To determine the efficiency of a wire, we need to know its resistance. The lower this parameter, the less loss there will be in the wire. But as you probably remember from physics lessons, the lower the temperature of the conductor, the lower its resistance. Therefore, to standardize this indicator, all calculations are usually made for wires with a temperature of 20⁰C.
  • But there is another aspect to this. The higher the cross-section of the wire, the lower its resistance. Therefore, each wire size has its own standards. So a wire with a cross section of 1x6 has a resistance of 3.11 Ohms per kilometer of length, and a wire of 50 mm 2 has a resistance of 0.394 Ohms/km.

  • If the cable being measured has a temperature other than 20⁰С, then to check you should use the formula - R 20 = R t K t 1000/L. In this formula, R 20 is our resistance at 20⁰С, R t is the measured resistance of the wire, K t is the correction factor, which we determine from the table below, and L is the length of the measured section of wire.

  • But the reliability of PuGV wires is ensured by high-quality insulation. For this purpose, special high-voltage insulation tests are carried out. A voltage of 2.5 kV is applied to the wire and the conductor must withstand it for at least 5 minutes.
  • In general, at a temperature of 20⁰C, the insulation of the PuGV wires should be at least 5 MOhm. For installations up to 1000V this is quite enough.
  • In addition, the rules require that the insulation properly withstand elevated temperatures. To do this, they provide data on the minimum insulation resistance at a temperature of 70⁰C. You can see these requirements in the photo below.

Mechanical characteristics of the wire

But the mechanical requirements for the wire are no less important. After all, ease of installation and the possibility of using in different rooms, as well as in different temperature conditions.

So:

  • One of the most important parameters of any wire or cable is its flexibility.. It depends on how far the wire can be bent without fear of damaging the conductors or insulation. The determining factor in this case is the bending radius.

The bending radius directly depends on the nominal diameter of the wire. And specifically in our case it is 5 diameters of PuGV. This is enough good indicator. For most less flexible products it does not exceed 10 or even 20 diameters.

  • As for aggressive environments, the wire tolerates high humidity very well.. So, at a temperature of +35⁰С, it can be operated in an environment with 98% humidity. And here sunlight All wires in PVC insulation are poorly tolerated, and our PuGV is no exception.
  • The operating temperature range of PuGV is also quite high. There, the wire can safely work both at minus 50⁰С and at temperatures up to plus 70⁰С.

Note! If you plan to install the wire yourself, then you must remember that the minimum temperature at which this wire can be installed is -15⁰C. But better installation perform at positive temperatures.

  • The service life of PuGV wires is usually 20 years. Guarantee period service usually lasts 2–3 years. But given experience, under normal operating conditions, this brand of wire can last you much longer.

Stages of selecting PuGV wires

In this case, you should make sure that the wire cross-section is correct, its design is correct and there are no visible defects.

The next step is to determine the electrical resistance of the conductive wires.

Regulatory documents require this to be done using the above and similar diagrams. But in private, you can simply use an ohmmeter.

After this, electrical tests of the wire insulation are performed.

To do this, insulation resistance is measured and high-voltage tests are carried out. As we noted above, the test voltage for the wire should be 2500V.

All wires must be marked accordingly. It must indicate the type of wire, manufacturer's mark, core cross-section and year of manufacture.

Design of PuGV (analogue of PV-3)

According to GOST, for marking PUGV, the decoding is carried out as follows: installation wire of increased flexibility with insulation made of polyvinyl chloride plastic. It can be laid in trays, gutters, boxes and other places where it is necessary to bend conductors.

According to GOST, installation cables can be used in the temperature range from -40°C to +65°C. They must also not lose their performance characteristics in rooms with high humidity(up to 98%) and temperatures up to +35°C. Prolonged heating of the product to a temperature of +70°C is allowed.

The minimum service life for this brand is at least 15 years, although some manufacturers guarantee a longer period - up to 20 years or more.

Description and design of the PuGV wire

Installation wire PuGV - wire with one flexible copper core, with insulation from PVC plastic, without shell.

Explanation of the designation:

absence of the letter “A” at the beginning – copper core;
“Pu” - installation wire;
“G” - for installation conditions requiring increased flexibility;
“B” - PVC insulation, including low fire hazard and heat-resistant;

Since PuGV installation wires are intended mainly for industrial use and are designed for a long service life, GOST sets strict requirements for finished products in terms of structural, electrical and mechanical parameters. The values ​​of individual parameters are also regulated for the period of operation and storage.

The range of produced sections of PuGV installation wires is from 0.5 to 95 mm 2.

The cores must be twisted from individual wires (at least 7 wires for sections up to 1.5 mm 2 inclusive and with the diameter of individual wires for the most used sections not exceeding that indicated in the table).


The insulation must fit tightly to the core and be removed without damaging the core. The nominal and minimum values ​​of the radial insulation thickness and the maximum outer diameter for wires of the most commonly used sections up to 50 mm 2 are given in the table.

It is allowed to repeat the configuration of the current-carrying core on the insulation surface within permissible deviations.

PuGV wires must be manufactured various colors. The coloring must be solid or done by applying two longitudinal stripes to the insulation natural color, located diametrically. For single-core wires used for grounding purposes, the insulation should be a solid yellow-green color.

The color of solid insulation or longitudinal strips must be specified in the order (the letters indicated in the table are added to the wire designation when ordering, for example: PuGV-2.5 Zh).


If there is no indication of a specific color in the order, the manufacturer supplies wires at its discretion, while it is allowed to supply wires with insulation of transitional and mixed colors (designation “BC”) in a volume of no more than 10% of the batch.

Conditions for installation and operation of the PuGV wire

Operation is allowed at ambient temperatures from minus 50°C to a temperature at which heating of the cores does not exceed plus 70°C. Installation must be carried out at a temperature not lower than minus 50°C. The minimum bending radius when laying is 5 outer diameters. Does not propagate combustion when laid alone. Service life – at least 15 years.

Technical characteristics of PuGV wire

Electrical resistance of current-carrying conductors on DC for wires with a cross-section of up to 50 mm 2 upon acceptance and delivery should be no more than that indicated in the table. For wires with a cross section of 0.75; 1 and 1.5 mm 2 core resistance depends on the core design.


For the period of operation and storage, it is allowed to increase the specified resistance values ​​of the cores by 20%.

The electrical insulation resistance per 1 km of length at a temperature of 20°C must be at least 1 MOhm upon acceptance and delivery and at least 0.01 MOhm for the period of operation and storage.

Upon acceptance and delivery, finished wires must withstand, when immersed in water without preliminary exposure to it, testing with an alternating voltage of 2000 V at a frequency of 50 Hz for 5 minutes, applied between the conductor and water (for the period of operation and storage - 1000 V under the same conditions).

The wires must withstand winding at a temperature of minus 15°C into a cylinder (drum) with a diameter equal to 5 outer diameters of the wire (on a special installation directly in the refrigerating chamber).

Requirements for packaging of PuGV wire

PuGV wires must be supplied in coils or on drums. The diameter of the coil or the diameter of the drum neck is not regulated, but should not be less than 10 outer diameters of the wire.

The construction length must be at least 100 m. In one delivery lot, no more than 10% of wires with a length of at least 20 m are allowed.

Labeling requirements

Wires must have the manufacturer's designation and the wire identification, which must be made in the form of a continuous marking on the insulation surface. The marking may be printed, embossed or stamped onto the surface of the wire. The distance from the end of the marking to the beginning of the next one should not exceed 500 mm. It is allowed to mark wires with a cross-section of up to 6 mm 2 in the form of a distinctive thread or colored stripes or solid marks.

The label attached to the coil or drum, or on the cheek of the drum, must indicate:

Trademark of the manufacturer;
- symbol wires (full, indicating the number of cores and cross-section);
- length in meters;
- gross weight (for drums) in kilograms
- date of manufacture (year, month);
- GOST designation.

The label must bear a technical control stamp and a certification mark.

For wires supplied on a drum, the label attached to the coil or drum, or on the cheek of the drum, must indicate the number of segments and their length through a plus sign from the top to the bottom layers in meters.

Requirements for storage conditions of PuGV wire

According to climatic conditions, wires must be stored indoors.

Weight and size parameters of PuGV wire

Approximate weights of the most common wire cross-sections for packaging and transportation purposes are given in the table. The given values ​​may differ for wires of different batches and manufacturers by 10% less or more.

PuGV wire load currents

Permissible load currents for wires are not regulated in GOST. In accordance with the PUE, for any installation method it is recommended that for single wires not exceed the load currents indicated in the table.

Available methods for quality control of PuGV wire

Control methods are presented that, while not strictly complying with GOST, allow preliminary conclusions to be drawn about the quality of the wire if the measured values ​​differ significantly from the regulated ones. The final conclusion about the compliance of the wire with GOST can be made only after testing the wire in a specialized laboratory using strict methods and in the volumes specified in GOST.

Visual inspection.
The following can be checked: marking, number of wires in the core, color and integrity of the insulation.

Measuring structural dimensions.
The insulation thickness and outer diameter can be checked using suitable measuring instruments. Measuring the wire diameter d pr and calculating the cross-section of the core using the formula 0.785d pr 2 N (where N is the number of wires in the core) is not a strict method for controlling the cross-section of the cores, because confirmation of cross-section compliance is electrical resistance, however, a significant deviation of the calculated cross-section from the nominal (more than 10%) may serve as a basis for doubts about the quality.

Measuring the electrical resistance of current-carrying conductors.
It can be carried out on the finished wire with an ohmmeter with a suitable measurement limit (with a small cross-section and the normal length of the wire in a coil or on a drum can be several Ohms) and recalculated to a length of 1 km. Special attention care should be taken to make good contact with the test leads.
